Was I The Only Who Wanted Luke Donald To Win?
8 Feb 2010 | 3:42 amCome on I'm sure I wasn't the only one who wanted Luke Donald to break out with his first win in almost 4 years on Sunday at the Northern Trust Open. Instead we got boring Steve Stricker winning again. This guy just goes out hits fairways and has a great short game and wins gain. It's hard to believe this guy hasn't on more. Maybe this is the year. -

Is Kansas For Real?
9 Feb 2010 | 6:42 amNow that the pro football season has come to end (shout out to the Saints — Who Dat!), we can concentrate fully on basketball without any needless distractions. There is so much parody in college basketball this season. Every time a new team reaches the number 1 spot in the polls, they get beat. The movement between the top 25 teams has been so fluid that you can’t really figure out who’s got a leg up on who? Kansas protected the number one spot on Monday with a win against Texas. That’s why when Kansas took over at number 1, I thought, “this is only going to last… -
PSA Screening Detection: U.S. versus Europe
9 Feb 2010 | 6:05 amDetection of prostate cancer using PSA blood levels (prostate specific antigen) is significantly lower in the United States than in Europe, say researchers. Prostate cancer screening using the PSA levels is being encouraged to detect early prostate cancer, but who is screened and how often depends on individual physicians or clinics. The U.S. National Institutes of Health site notes that higher risk men are usually recommended to be screened starting at the age of 40 or 45 years. For men with no risk factors for prostate cancer, such as family history, some doctors are not actively… -
Fallout 3: New Vegas Coming Fall 2010
9 Feb 2010 | 5:25 amI haven’t played Fallout 3 in months – maybe even a year. OK. I don’t think a whole year but it has been so long I can’t remember the last time Iplayed the game. Why is this important? Because Fallout 3 was amazing and wonderful and I LOVED it but after a while, I got incredibly bored with it. I also saw the ending of it while watching Tucker play his save and was so damn disappointed in the crap ending that I didn’t see a reason to keep on playing. BUT, now I’ve seen the New Vegas trailer and while I can’t exactly put my finger on why, New Vegas gets… -
“Bioshock 2” Is Now Available!
9 Feb 2010 | 2:48 amThe highly anticipated Bioshock 2 was released today and I can imagine that hundreds of copies are flying off the shelves as I type. The original Bioshock was released back in 2007 and they’ve already got a great-looking follow up to the acclaimed game. The sequel is set about 10 years after the events of the first game and it all unfolds in the underwater city of Rapture. A monster has been kidnapping little girls and you can’t exactly let that continue, can you? In order to help them, though, you’re going to have to survive which might be easier said than done. Here are some… -
Ellen to Make “American Idol” Debut Tonight
9 Feb 2010 | 1:38 amIn a season filled with controversy, Ellen DeGeneres will be making her debut as the new judge on American Idol. After Paula Abdul quit, it was a scramble to find someone to fill her seat and considering the fact that Ellen is such a huge fan of the show, I thought it was a good choice. image: Michael Becker / FOX Of course, there’s been all kinds of drama and there have been reports that Ellen is already clashing with fellow judge, Simon Cowell. With viewership down, I’m sure they are hoping she can bring back the ratings and a feud with Simon would definitely help that. Post from:…

Bell rate increase
9 Feb 2010 | 4:00 amWell I just noticed today that Bell raised the rate of the home phone service by $2. Seems this started as of Jan 1, 2010. Now about a year and a half ago I signed a 2 year contract with them and with doing so they gave me $5 each month for the first year of a two year contract. Now that we are in the 2nd year with only 5 months to go they raise the rate. They are telling me that if I cancel I will have to pay the $60 the amount of savings they had given me. To me this is not far as they raised the rate and not me I would not cencel early if they did not do this. Do I have any options? or do… -
OTA - replace cable or add more?
9 Feb 2010 | 3:40 amI just bought and ran 70 feet of RG-6 from my TV to my new antenna - unfortunately I am short about 15 feet. So I need about 15 more feet of cable. Should I replace the 70 feet with a new run of 85 foot cable (not too difficult) or add 15 feet with a connector, which will result in more loss? Thanks. -
"24" Won't Record on FOX-HD (West coast)
9 Feb 2010 | 12:04 amI record network programs using west coast feeds because I generally find the quality to be better and more reliable than east coast feeds. Last week (Feb. 1st) I had "24" set to record on channel 531 (Rogers Toronto) and the next evening when I sat down to watch it, it wasn't on my list of recorded programs. I know without a doubt that I set it to record (although to be fair, memory can play tricks), so when I set my recordings for the week on Sunday I double checked "scheduled recordings" to make sure I've got everything for the week. I went to put on "House" a… -
Should I Consider a Projector?
8 Feb 2010 | 9:09 pmI'm sure these questions get asked all the time, but I couldn't really find anything that answered my question. Here's my story... I've learned a lot for this site and once again turn to you folks in my time of need. We just bought our first house in September and my only wish was for something that could be converted into a "Man Cave". It was only two days after we got the keys that I was tearing out walls and making plans. It turns out I should have measured a little more before making plans...:( Our basement is 14" x 26". A good size for a "cave", but nothing…

iPhoneWorld.ca: Apple iPhone Devices – Flash or HTML5?
8 Feb 2010 | 5:07 amiPhoneWorld.ca writes: Apple and Adobe may never see eye to eye and are still throwing punches at one another over Apple’s stand that they will not allow its new iPad to run Adobe’s Flash software. Steve Jobs, Apple CEO states that flash is buggy and will slow down the various Apple devices and goes as far as to state that Adobe is lazy. Adobe’s chief technology officer, Kevin Lynch ignores the punches and throws one of his own stating that Apple wants the control of what their iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users can do with all their devices. iPhoneWorld.ca: iPhone Stays with AT&T
5 Feb 2010 | 5:27 amiPhoneWorld.ca writes: Even though some iPhone users may not be very happy with AT&T’s coverage, it looks like AT&T will keep the iPhone for another year. On analyst explained that Verizon Wireless, which was up for carrying the iPhone, will not be the carrier and issued a stock downgrade. Jonathan Chaplin, the Credit Suisse analyst stated that AT&T would not lose their hold on to the iPhone until at least 2011. Given this amount of time, he believes that AT&T will work on their network problems and clear up the issue with “patchiness”. “We believe there is a 75…

The stimulating yet relentless insanity of paper notebooks
9 Feb 2010 | 3:00 amI own a lot of notebooks. Not the ones below… but I do tend to get a lot of cheap notebooks and scribblers over time. I make notes to myself all of the time. Some of them turn into essays, blog posts, or other content. Some are just there to kill time. And, sad to say, some of those notes are desperate attempts to keep myself from falling asleep at times when I really, really should be awake. You can tell because these semi-conscious scribblings gradually trail off into illegible gibberish. But I digress. A new notebook feels wonderful. It’s full of promise; of… -

When a river stops running
3 Feb 2010 | 4:10 amThere is a river that runs by my office building, as it has for hundreds of thousands of years. It’s not running right now, at least not along its surface. It was running, even through the winter, until yesterday, when temperatures of -25 degrees Celsius finally caused ice to form on the top of the water, bringing its movement to a halt. I don’t know about you, but the idea of that much water stopping, frozen, is pretty amazing when you think about it. But what’s really happening when a river freezes? Is it that the energy that tends to hold objects at rest becomes…

From 1996, this telling quote from Dick Pound: But on the skyline just beyond the park’s gates lurk the logos of so-called ambush marketers – companies such as shoe giant Nike, which have not paid a sponsorship fee to the Games, but hope to cash in anyway. Is it Rude to Let a Liar Speak Uninterrupted?

Do whatever the moderator will allow. – The first part of the debate is available, as is the 2nd part. Plimer accidentally plugs DeSmogBlog while trying to smear it and the David Suzuki Foundation. Cell Phone Surprise
3 Feb 2010 | 3:18 pmI’m not really surprised, but some lawmakers may be. The new study, which was completed in December, looked at crashes (and not just at those involving cellphones) in those four places and found no decrease in accidents, despite the bans’ having reduced the use of hand-held cellphones 41 to 76 percent. The researchers obtained those numbers by going out to street corners and exit ramps to observe how many people had cellphones up to their ears before the bans compared with after the bans. “We can’t even see a blip in the data for crashes,” said Mr. Lund. Furthermore, there was…

Head’s Up, Twitter; Google’s Coming!
9 Feb 2010 | 4:34 amThe blogosphere is abuzz about Google’s plans to integrate a “Twitter-Killer” into GMail – and there are already people such as Robert Scoble boldly suggesting it’s not going to happen. Twitter is the dominant micro-blogging service, having forced Pownce (remember them?) to go away while a score of such as StatusNet and Plurk quietly toil away in the background. Meanwhile, Google’s first stab at the market, Jaiku, was a dismal failure. That said, anyone who dismisses Google’s chances of posing a threat Twitter would be making a mistake. Here’s a… -

Is Foursquare For Real?
6 Feb 2010 | 5:37 amAccording to TechCrunch, Foursquare is now attracting more than one million check-ins/week. It’s certainly a big number but does it really suggest that Foursquare is showing signs of becoming the next Twitter, or to be fair, the next widely-embraced social media tool? Take look at Foursquare’s traffic over the past six months: What’s interesting is that traffic growth in December vs. November was modest (unique visitors grew by 7.8%, while pageviews rose 15%). This is nice growth but not red-hot, which suggests Foursquare likely has a small group of enthusiastic users who… -
Does Every Company Need Social Media
5 Feb 2010 | 2:32 amI was reading a blog post recently by Valeria Maltoni (aka ConversationAgent) about Apple and its army of customer evangelists who enthusiastically spread the gospel about new products and genius of Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Part of Apple’s ability to activate and engage customer evangelists is an aggressive and creative advertising effort that saw the company spend nearly $500-million in 2008. What’s interesting about Apple and its ability to generate amazing amounts of conversations is how it’s not really using social media at a time when many consumer-focused companies are scrambling to… -
Is Social Media Making Journalists Lazy?
3 Feb 2010 | 11:50 amWhen I was a newspaper reporter, a key part of the job was finding and interviewing sources who could offer information, perspective, insight and, of course, some good quotes. It required legwork and the ability to build relationships and trust with people. While talking to sources is still an integral part of journalism, I’ve noticed a growing number of newspaper articles recently that cite or quote blog posts, blog comments or tweets. For example, the Toronto Star’s story about Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams going to a U.S. hospital for heart surgery included a quote from…

A Frugal Valentine’s Day
9 Feb 2010 | 2:30 amI’ll be the first to admit, I’m not a huge fan of days that are purely commercial. Valentine’s Day is one of those. I’m sure it’s a huge money maker for card makers, chocolatiers and restaurants. Yet I’d be somewhat disappointed if the day passed and nothing was acknowledged. Valentine’s Day should be about appreciating the one you love. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. Here are some ideas for celebrating a frugal Valentine’s Day. Roadside Assistance Comparison
8 Feb 2010 | 2:30 amI’ve never really given thought about buying roadside assistance protection before as I considered it just another unnecessary cost. However, with an alternator failure the other day in our 8 year old car, it made me think about what it would cost to get a tow truck should I ever need one. Along the same line of thought, the idea of roadside assistance started to appeal to me. Being the comparison shopper that I am, I started to do some digging around on the available roadside assistance options out there. From my research, there seems to be quite a few players in the… -

2010 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony Pre-Show
9 Feb 2010 | 3:07 amSite of the 2010 Opening & Closing ceremonies. Today I had the opportunity to get a sneak peak at the 2010 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony Pre-show held at BC Place Stadium in downtown Vancouver. Ticket I got last minute to attend the pre-show. Security tents are set-up behind me. When I arrived at BC Place, there was a medium sized crowd bustling in front of the security tents. After about 10 minutes, we were directed towards the security check points. People with bags had to form separate lines from those without bags who were able to go through “Express Security”. Crowd is… -
5 Tips for Taking Better Portraits
7 Feb 2010 | 9:47 pmPete Cashmore, 5DMKII, 85mm f/1.8, 1/200 @f/3.5, ISO 100. Before I jump head first into 2010 Olympic coverage (3 days!!!), I thought I should give my favourite photographer followers some post love. Here are 5 Tips to get more professional looking portraits: 1. Light your subject. Lighting is one of most important aspects in creating a great portrait. Good lighting is easy to achieve, but requires skill and an off-camera flash. Getting that flash off your camera and onto a light stand with a shoot-through umbrella may seem a bit daunting, but trust me, it’s the only way to guarantee… -
Rockin’ the 2010 GRAMMYs
3 Feb 2010 | 11:19 pm(David Karp (Tumblr), Rachel, Pete Cashmore (Mashable), me, Darya, Kevin Rose (Digg), Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park) & Anna) Sunday was a pretty normal day. I woke up at the Beverly Hilton, ordered 3 small pancakes for $20, stole a muffin from Jessica Alba at a Press Junket, got my hair and makeup done, put on a dress (!), jumped in a pimpin’ limo with Pete Cashmore, Kevin Rose, & David Karp, drank champagne, got yelled at for taking photos of the Red Carpet & nearly got harpooned by Lady Gaga’s diamonte headpiece. Then, I waved at Weird Al, heard the Pants-on-the-Ground… -
10 New Years Resolutions Every Photographer should make
2 Jan 2010 | 2:20 pmI am clutching my 5DMKII and literally buzzing inside, thinking about the photographic potential of the new year. The possibilities are endless. Now, I just have to commit the time and passion required to become a great photographer. In that spirit, I think we should all try to keep these 10 New Years Resolutions. Now, everyone say after me: 1. I will learn how to use my camera. This seems like an obvious point, but we are all guilty of skipping our camera manual and just fiddling with settings. Ah, this one works right? Spot-metering? Why not. Hey, what does that button do? Seems to make… -
My Photographic Journey
28 Dec 2009 | 11:36 amPhoto by Scott Stulberg. I was just looking through my portfolio this past week and physically cringing at how bad some of my old shots are. I almost deleted them from my Flickr stream, but then I realized that each photo represents a part of my photographic journey. My photography evolved a lot from the days when I use to take pictures of Pez, cupcakes, and interesting trash I found in my back alley. It seems so silly now, but had I not spent everyday shooting, learning, and exploring the world with my camera, I wouldn’t be taking the pictures I am taking today. Super hero Pez, Canon…

I'd fall down a rabbit hole for this any day ...
27 Jan 2010 | 5:53 pmI have long loved Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. My bookshelf holds a few copies, including the the Annotated Alice by Martin Gardner (one of my favourite mathematicians & logicians) - a fascinating read, just for the annotations themselves. I've also been enjoying The Annotated Pride and Prejudice (not by Gardner, rather David Shapard). There is something quite delightful about annotated volumes. Like having the Coles notes built right in. Though I do take issue with some of Shapard's interpretations of the language in Austen. But I digress ...I am very keen… -

Music Discovery - The Darwin Song Project
9 Jan 2010 | 4:21 pmMy father-in-law is the source of many of the tunes playing on my iPod. This holiday season, he delighted me with another find: a live recording of The Darwin Song Project which includes one of my favourite artists, Karine Polwart. Among the celebrations taking place around the world in honour of Darwin Year 2009, the Shrewsbury Folk Festival organized the Darwin Song Project, a songwriting retreat in rural Shropshire. The Darwin Song Project invited 8 artists from the UK and US to come together for a week to write songs which have a resonance and relevance to the life of Darwin. The…

Mmmm... j'y retournerai demain. Dans le fond, est-ce vraiment une punition ? -

WEST: A multimedia collaboration by Sarah Baugh and Nicole Lavelle
9 Feb 2010 | 12:10 amLand gallery will present WEST, a mixed-media (papercut, collage, drawing, pattern and installation) project by Portland artists Sarah Baugh and Nicole Lavelle. Natives of Idaho and California, these two now call Oregon home. Together they will muse on their place within the great American West. WEST features studies in materials and narrative, and the show's collaboration will reveal a synthesized cobbling of shared and individual experience. Baugh and Lavelle draw from graphic design, craft and art to wrangle an understanding of the pioneering spirit and the natural beauty of their region. -

Manga-Inspired Textiles
8 Feb 2010 | 11:17 amManga by a Swede? The world is just becoming so much smaller and smaller. Coming this month, IKEA will launch CHARLOTTA, a new collection of Manga fabric designed by Sweden's Åsa Ekström. A cartoonist or "mangaka" inspired by the Japanese way of creating comic-strip stories, Åsa creates a ficticious mix of well-known buildings in Scandinavia among which Godzilla stands on the CHARLOTTA TECKNING and then shows her love of Tokyo with the motif on CHARLOTTA BLOCK. Marketers Miss The Mark With Twitter
8 Feb 2010 | 5:19 pmHow long has it been since we had a, "Twitter is dead" article? AdWeek published the article, The Tweet Hereafter, yesterday and it will probably make no sense to any Marketer who sees any of the Social Media platforms as something more than just another advertising channel. "Like Second Life, Twitter has become a wasteland for brands. Verizon, a company that spent more than $1 billion on advertising in 2009, has around 5,000 followers -- about 0.3 percent the amount that Perez Hilton has. Coca-Cola has 15,000. Apple's not even on Twitter. And some corporate Twitter accounts… -
Measuring Real Success Online With Google's Analytics Evangelist, Avinash Kaushik
7 Feb 2010 | 10:22 amEpisode #189 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to. Seth Godin wrote a seminal book called, All Marketers Are Liars. Avinash Kaushik tells us about how marketing connects and how to measure it in such a practical and real way, that some Marketers can't stand the honesty that comes out of his mouth. Maybe Kaushik should write a book called, Some Marketers Hate Avinash Kaushik? Along with being the Analytics Evangelist for Google (and Blogger over at Occam's Razor), Kaushik is also the best-selling author of two books, Web Analytics -… -
There Is Nothing Wrong With Making Money
6 Feb 2010 | 12:11 pmFor some reason, no one in Social Media is really allowed to make any money. It's verboten. It's against the community spirit. It's the wrong thing to do. That's just, plain stupid. Yes, the new digital channels are primed for those who are looking to connect, communicate and engage in conversations, but if there is no benefit in the end, then all is lost. For some, that end benefit will be dollars in the bank, for others it will be social capital (check out Tara Hunt's amazing book, The Whuffie Factor, for more on that), for some it will be the growth of their personal brand (which in turn… -

4 Feb 2010 | 6:50 pmMany people felt that the advent of television was going to kill everyone's attention span. Many feel the same way about the Internet. Just today, the same question/mantra came out in a meeting: "when do people have the time to go through all of this content online?" It's a fair question, but it's a bit of a non-issue. The reality is that most individuals are perfectly amazing at editing and aggregating their content intake. It's not a question of how many Blogs any one individual reads, follows and comments on, it's about what they retain. Some individuals can read one piece of…

Enjoy a Green Fundraiser with the Power of Soy Candles
16 Dec 2009 | 10:29 amAnyone who has a child in school already knows that fundraisers are a big part of the school experience. Whether your son or daughter attends a public or a private school, chances are you will be receiving a fundraising packet at least once every couple of months. Unfortunately many schools are still using the same old fundraising items – things like candy bars, pizzas and tins of popcorn. While these fun food items certainly have their place, there are better and more effective fundraising options. The same problem often plagues nonprofit organizations and community groups. These… -
Thinking negatively can boost your memory, study finds
2 Nov 2009 | 9:09 amAn Autralian study is showing that bad moods can actually be good for your brain. The study from the University of New South Wales, showed that people in a negative mood were more critical of, and paid more attention to, their surroundings than happier people, who were more likely to believe anything they were told. The study also showed that positive moods seem to promote more creativity and coperation while negative moods tend to promote attentiveness and awareness of the surroundings. This seems crazy to me becuase I always feel like when I am in a bad mood I couldnt care less about… -
Ever Heard of Guaranteed Issue Health Insurance?
2 Oct 2009 | 8:14 amRecently as I was doing some internet research on affordable health insurance plans, I came across a health insurance term that had never heard of…guaranteed issue health insurance. Now I dont claim to be a health insurance expert…far from it, but surely I would have heard of that before. Well in some circles it is referred to as a Mini Med health plan (as opposed to a major medical plan which is what most people have) or as a guaranteed acceptance health plan. The bottom line is this a health insurance plan for people who either have pre-existing conditions that prevents… -

What Does Crèche Mean?
8 Feb 2010 | 9:13 pmI pity anybody who has had to learn English as second (or third or fifth) language. It’s a confusing language to begin with, the regional differences are sometimes staggering (or downright opposing). Take the word crèche, for example. I was introduced to the term when I lived in Ireland, where I learned that it referred to a daycare or nursery. When I subsequently lived in Malta, I heard the Maltese use crèche to refer to nativity scenes. Being the most Catholic country outside of the Vatican, they took their Christmas dioramas very seriously. Some of the crèches were sprawling,… -
The Men Your Man Could Smell Like
8 Feb 2010 | 12:09 pmIn recent months, while watching hockey games, I’ve noticed these L’Oreal For Men commercials featuring Patrick Dempsey: The target demographic for these commercials is surely wives and girlfriends. The cliche here is the wife sitting beside her husband on the couch, a little bored as she half-watches LePeiter pass to Huckenchuck and go offside. Then she immediately perks up when Doctor McDreamy or whatever his frackin’ nickname is shows up on-screen. The ad’s subtext is simple: “Buy this for your man, and he’ll be slightly more similar to Patrick… -

Its buildings were badly damaged during last month’s earthquake. Graffiti in Morse Code?
3 Feb 2010 | 1:13 pmI was in a government building recently, and visited the bathroom. This odd graffiti was on the stall wall: When you decipher the code, it reads “what is our duty”. This wasn’t the publicly accessible part of the building, so presumably this was written by a government worker. Is this a public servant asking his colleagues about their commitment? Or is he just making a bad pun on the term “doodie”?

8 Feb 2010 | 6:30 amWhen chef Jean Pierre Challet applied for a liquor licence for his new restaurant Ici Bistro, he dreamed of a place where locals could meet over brioche. Little did he know he would instead bring the community together over a political battle that still lies smouldering. After working for years in some of Toronto's most respected restaurants (The Fifth, Le Select Bistro, Windsor Arms Hotel, Auberge du Pommier) Challet turned his attention to opening a small bistro on the corner of Harbord and Manning. He was confident he had chosen the right location. More... -
TTC Employees Battle Back
8 Feb 2010 | 6:26 amAs reported in today's Morning Brew, TTC employees fed up with being repeatedly shamed in the media have decided to battle back, and may even initiate a work-to-rule campaign. The creation of a members-only Facebook page has served as the occasion for employees to turn the tables by sharing photos of transit riders behaving badly, including those depicting feet on seats, graffiti and subway cars strewn with trash. Apparently the irony of such a response is lost on our friendly TTC workers. More... -
Coming Up Roses in the Junction
8 Feb 2010 | 6:08 amOpen for over 110 years, Martin's Flower's has been a Junction staple since around the time the neighbourhood was founded. With excellent service and attention to detail, it's not hard to understand the reason for their longevity. And as part of a tight-knit community of local, independent businesses, the focus on blooms from southwestern Ontario offers an added environmental bonus. Read my profile of Martin's Flowers in the design stores section. -
Red Prince Apples Hit Toronto Grocery Stores
8 Feb 2010 | 6:02 amFriday marked the official introduction of a new-to-Ontario variety of apple -- the Red Prince. It's a European variety brought over from a small town called Weert located in the Netherlands, and over the past nine-years Irma and Marius Botden have steadily built up enough acreage to supply the Red Prince to large chains like Loblaws and Sobey's. On Friday, 10,000 apples were given away to passersby in the PATH at the Exchange Tower and First Canadian Place to promote the official launch. With a motif of spreading civility to all the land, the promoters also threw in hand massages and…

Wrath of Khanna: National Hum - Hillside Inside in Review
9 Feb 2010 | 3:48 amHey gang. Hope all is well. I had a great time at the Magnetic Fields show last night and Laura Barrett did a very charming job opening up. Good times! Any way, on today's show, I present a retrospective of this past Saturday's Hillside Inside fest in Guelph for your listening pleasure. Here's what you'll hear: Me introducing Woodhands to a loyal audience at the end of a long day. Owen Pallett and his guitar player Thomas talking about Metallica, Liona Boyd, and nuns. Hawksley Workman is a big fan of mine (or maybe Radio 3) and we make a potential Breakfast Club date. Basia Bulat bravely… -
Cherry Chapstick "Silencer" - Track of the Day for February 9, 2010
9 Feb 2010 | 12:00 amSmack your lips. That is the sound of ChapStick®, a staple for lovers of soft lips since the late 1800s. Can you believe it's been around for well over a century? It hasn't just been around, it's been busy. Bet you didn't know that ChapStick® tubes stuffed with hidden microphones helped bring down President Nixon in the Great Watergate scandal of the 1970s. Supple lips and civic duty. What a combo. Now the sound of Chapstick, specifically Cherry Chapstick, is more along the lines of a Junior Boys rendezvous with Joy Division in Kingston, Ontario. This trio of guys, not much older than 20, has… -
Tonight on Appetite for Distraction: Ice, Ice Baby
8 Feb 2010 | 4:47 pmNo, not the Vanilla kind - the real kind, as in frozen water and people with skates. This morning Grant Lawrence hosted live from the Robson Square ice rink and I decided to head down and meet up with some of the musicians who donned their skates for the event. I headed down, recorder in hand and ended up talking to not one, but two Dans: Dan Mangan and Dan Moxon of Bend Sinister. But wait - there's more ice! It turns out my New Music Monday guest Ken Farrell of Toronto's Gravity Wave is a former hockey player who now works for... a hockey team. You can make this stuff up. Well you could, but… -
TCNH Feb. 8: Monday Music News?
8 Feb 2010 | 2:55 pmI'm all flustered! It's been years since I worked in the restaurant biz. Back then, split shifts were common...although, I would often drink in between. But I haven't today! No! Today, I return at this strange hour to bring you The Craig Norris Hour (Reprise). For those of you for whom my show is on too early, Monday is usually the day when I peruse the web looking for music stories that I may have missed over the weekend. Stories not unlike... :: Noel Gallagher asks to appear at assault court sentencing :: Cohen postpones European tour :: S.C.E.N.E. Music Festival looking for artists ::… -
The Missing Link: February 8, 2010
8 Feb 2010 | 2:45 pmRadio Canada; a console design inspired by the dedication of CBC listeners. (Sorry folks... this only a prototype.) This time-lapse video of Vancouver is the sort of film usually prefaced with words like "stunning", though "gobsmaking" also works nicely. If it's good enough for torturing terror suspects, it's good enough to teach your 4-year-old the alphabet. U.S. soldier charged with waterboarding daughter. Pasty English editor for Rotten Tomatoes torn to shreds and partially eaten by Paul Rudd & Jason Segal during interview. New footage of Challenger shuttle disaster emerges 24 years…

Who is the “mainstream media” anyway?
6 Jan 2010 | 2:23 pmBarely a week into the New Year, the future of newspapers discussion is still upon us. In fact, as I was writing this, a link to a Wall Street Journal Online’s listing of 200 “Best and Worst Jobs of 2010” – was being sent around Twitter via the accompanying tweet (courtesy of Slate): ‘Newspaper reporter’ is [...] -
Thank You
31 Dec 2009 | 7:25 amIn some ways, the last twelve months feel like one big blur. It’s difficult to try and capture all of DMS’s accomplishments, but some definite highlights come to mind. This year, our main boardroom was the site of over a dozen – many, political – editorial roundtable discussions featuring Federal Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff, Ontario Premier [...] -
My Top 9 of 2009
27 Dec 2009 | 8:42 pmWith 2009 coming to a close, end-of-year lists seem to be on everybody’s mind. So, like last year, below are some of the online “wows” I discovered over the last 12 months. Limiting this list to nine was daunting, but here’s what I came up with … in no particular ranking: 1. Journalistics Blog – is [...]

Athletes Reach for the Silver – and Accessorize in Winning Style!
24 Jan 2010 | 8:30 amWith all eyes focused on B.C. this February, Vancouver-area Denise Relke’s hand-crafted, sports-themed silver jewellery is a must-have for anyone visiting the province this winter. This athlete-turned-jewellery maker’s story is in itself, positively Olympian! They say that every cloud has a silver lining, and in the case of Denise Relke, this was almost quite literally true. When this avid runner’s broken ankle forced her to take it easy, she filled some of her newly-found spare time with a silversmithing night class – and fell in love with the art form. In true marathoner fashion,… -

UPDATED: Tiger Woods, the crash, and the public relations hurricane
29 Nov 2009 | 7:24 amI just searched for "Tiger Woods" on Google News. There are nearly 6,000 articles about him in the last week. I'd wager (I don't have time to count) that the vast majority are about the car accident he was in, the evolving explanations of what happened, and the subsequent allegations of marital strife and infidelity.Woods is, in my opinion, a rare sports figure -- someone who's dominated his sport and transcended it, and (at least 'til now) has not put a foot wrong. Look, if John Daly was in his SUV at 2:15 a.m. and crashed into a fire hydrant and a tree, it probably wouldn't make more than 2… -
UPDATED: New communications blood at Ottawa City Hall
27 Nov 2009 | 7:58 amIt's not usual for people in the PR game to make the news when they take a new job. But there have been a couple of big changes in the last 48 hours here in Ottawa that have got a lot of chatter going in the blogosphere and the mainstream media.City of Ottawa director of communications Denis Abbott was dismissed on Wednesday, and now it appears that there have been three hires made in the communications shop at the city.Chris Day, a former reporter for CTV Ottawa who has been press secretary for Transport Minister John Baird for the last year or so, is going to become a manager (don't know… -
XP: Time for Ottawa to help women in need
16 Nov 2009 | 8:54 amIn the last week, there have been two fires at facilities that serve women in Ottawa. The first took place on Novemer 8 at the Cornerstone Women's Shelter, where a woman died of burns. On the weekend, it appears that somebody tossed a Molotov cocktail at a women's rooming house, also in Centretown. It seems that the women in the rooming house escaped unharmed. But, as my fellow flack and blogger Ian Capstick points out, this is not only a tragedy for each and every women who was living in one of the properties; it's a tragedy for the shelter and housing system. We don't have the flexibility in…

Tim Hortons bans New Brunswick customer for complaining
9 Feb 2010 | 6:14 amNew Brunswick man banned from Tim Hortons A tempest in a Tim Hortons decaf cup is brewing in New Brunswick. Jimmy Craig said Monday he’s been banned from two Tim Hortons outlets in the province because of his complaints about the decaf, but the company said it made the decision after he became aggressive with staff. Craig said he voiced his displeasure on several occasions over the last two years about “burnt” decaffeinated coffee at a Tim Hortons in St. Andrews. “I made a complaint to the store manager in 2008 and things changed for a while and the coffee got better… -
Alberta braces for $2B fiscal correction
9 Feb 2010 | 6:07 amEd Stelmach Alberta’s Conservative government will attempt to bail the province out of a record deficit Tuesday with a new tight-fisted budget. But with the most volatile revenue flow in all of Canada, Alberta could end up being swamped by a drop in energy prices or an expected boost in the dollar. “Absolutely,” conceded Finance Minister Ted Morton on Monday as he posed with the budget documents for reporters. “Every time the dollar goes up by a penny it costs us $225 million in lost revenues. That’s why I’m going to give this budget with a sense of… -

Federal Competition Bureau seeks to smash anti-competitive rules on Canadian MLS
8 Feb 2010 | 12:09 pmFederal Competition Bureau to investigate MLS The federal Competition Bureau says it will challenge the restrictive rules that govern the multiple listing service (MLS) system used by most Canadian home sellers to list their properties. The MLS system, run by the Canadian Real Estate Association, includes information that is only available to CREA members, and its structure impairs consumer choice, the bureau said Monday. It wants consumers to be able to pay a lower fee to list their homes on MLS without being forced to get a whole range of other services that they must pay for. This would… -

7 Feb 2010 | 12:01 pmI have another book from Chicken Soup for the Soul titled Chicken Soup for the Soul: True Love: 101 Heartwarming and Humorous Stories about Dating, Romance, Love and Marriage.
