    Fabienne Flessel

This is probably one of the most debated topics among linguists worldwide - it is an incredibly complex and diverse language. The fruit of migrations and population mingling, Creole language has been, since the distant times of slavery, a vernacular language, either prohibited or underrated. But things started to change in the 1980s, as explained by the Creole-oriented Reunionese blog, Renyone [Cr, Eng]: In 1981 scientists having Creole as their…

Hey gang ! I've been using DigitalHome.ca for ± 2 years on a weekly basis and love it. A friend is looking to buy an HDTV and ask me a basic question I'm not sure how to answer !? If you are comparing two sets with 1920X1080 native resolution: one 32" and the other 50", they have the same amount of vertical and horizontal lines/pixels right ? Does that mean that the 50" has more space/gap between each lines/pixels ? If so, isn't that a bad thing ? Or is it simply expected that you will sit farther back on a 50 inch thus "eliminating" the gap difference to your eyes ?

  • How to deserve an audience – revisited

    markdykeman
    19 Nov 2009 | 9:03 am
One year ago today I wrote a post called how to deserve an audience.  The point of the post was to talk about what you as a blogger, social media user, or whatever, should do to deserve an audience.  The conclusion was that the best you can do is to provide valuable content.  There were a lot of points discussed in the post, so as an experiment I’m going to see if I still stand behind everything that I wrote about exactly one year ago. One thing that bugs me about Twitter is that the term followers, the people who elect to see your microblogging updates, sounds like a cross between a…
  • A lesson in which words have multiple meanings = communication failure

VS Images by choking sun and psd Hello class. Today’s lesson is about how to communicate poorly while trying to give a humorous speech.  Pay close attention, this could be good for you. As I’ve mentioned before I’m a member of Toastmasters.  Today was meeting day.  I’m working on one of  my Advanced Communicator designations and I’m finally trying to complete all of the requirements.  It’s been dragging on for far too long.  I had an idea for a humorous speech where you’re supposed to tell a couple of funny stories while trying to make a…

I’ve made a couple of minor changes in my social media profiles and the blog that I thought I’d mention. I decided to retire the classic Broadcasting Brain avatar from my Twitter account, at least for now. I’m now using a real picture of myself.  I figured it was time for a change – may as well go with my real face. I changed the blog’s tagline from “Using cognitive surplus to create uncanny content” to “Different thoughts about thinking differently”.  The new tagline describes this blog better than the old one, I think.  I still like…

Here’s another link to another TED video.  This one is about spaghetti sauce types, as presented by Malcolm Gladwell.  Interesting listening, as always. I’ve categorized this entry under creativity because I think there’s a valid point here about creativity and innovation.  Sometimes new ideas come from careful analysis of existing data or else from asking the right questions.  It’s a good story.

“That evidence and the suggestion that every single Taliban prisoner that was taken into custody and turned over was tortured is simply not credible and cannot be sustained by facts.” I wonder what was said by the government following the revelations of torture in 1993? Makes you wonder why Colvin would stake his reputation on something “not credible” nor “sustained by facts”. To MacKay, your definition of “torture” is probably dependent upon what your definition of ‘is’ is. Cell phone providers in Canada can go take a long hike off a short…

My main blog is still offline, I haven’t had the several hours to throw at cleaning up whatever problem was plaguing it. I am getting some other important stuff done in the mean time though, and have watched very little TV as well. I did see “Zombieland” [8/10] last night, however. It doesn’t have much of a plot, but is still entertaining. Last night a fireball flew over the western States. Noctilucent clouds may have resulted from the debris, or could be a coincidence, much as the fireball was. Many people were watching an ongoing meteor shower, and caught sight of…

My main blog is still down, I hope to have it back running by next week. It’s November 11. I explained this week why we wear poppies to my friend who came from Vietnam. Here are some short stories from WWII: My one grandfather was a bomber during WWII. He and his crew would take photos out of the bottom of the plane, and since the plane was not designed for this it was very dangerous. Someone held him into the plane as he snapped photos, but one time something happened and he slipped. At the last second he caught himself on the edge of the bomb bay, but injured his stomach. I got my tire filled with the purchase of a $1.00 Presta valve adapter at Western Cycle, and rode home. The Rider game is on now, and they’re winning by 10 points in the first half. Yesterday’s temperature almost broke a record, it missed by about 3 degrees, making it to +18 C. After being interviewed by Global Regina News in the morning, I finished working for the week. I went out to Classic Buffet, and had tons of strawberries.

Everyone went list-crazy in 1999, but the end of the aughts is fast approaching with little fanfare or retrospective. So, since this December figures to be a lot less interesting than the last, this is the perfect time for a Calgary Grit mini-contest. So, what I want from everyone are suggestions for the “top Canadian political moment of the decade”. You can define that however you see fit, but the general gist would be to find a good balance between what was exciting at the time and what would make it into a Canadian political history textbook 30 or 40 years from now (assuming we still…

A few weeks back, I posted on the ridings where the Liberals exceeded retrospective expectations in the 2008 elections (how's that for a Rumsfeldian opening sentence?).Click on the link for a fuller explanation, but the short of it is these were ridings where the Liberal candidate did a lot better than you'd expect them to, once regional shifts and incumbency effects were taken into account. So, for example, if the Liberal vote dropped 7 points in Edmonton from 2006 to 2008, and a Liberal candidate held onto the party's 2006 vote, then (ignoring incumbency for a second) he'd be considered to…

Having been involved in three start-ups, one of the must-have elements is simply having the right product at the right time. When I co-founded Blanketware in 2001, we were focused on providing natural language search so people could find and use online services. Unfortunately, the Web 2.0 revolution hadn’t happened yet so Blanketware was hurt by being ahead of its time. A stark contrast is Sysomos (a client), which is now thriving with its social media monitoring and analytics services – Heartbeat and MAP. Not only is the company’s technology best-of-class but, as important,…

It goes without saying that things have been pretty grim economically over the past year – millions of people have been laid off or restructured, while consumer spending has plummeted as people decide to hold off purchases after a decade-long shopping spree. But there appears to be a few signs the recession is starting to disappear. One indication is the re-emergence of demo opportunities. Over the past few months, I’ve been lucky to have been given the opportunity to evaluate a lot of new products and services. Some of this activity may have to do with the fact companies and PR…

There’s a lot of chatter about a Forrester Research report suggesting that 80% of Internet users in North America won’t pay for online newspaper and magazine content. This bolsters the contention that pay-to-play within the online content world is a non-starter. But what if you flip the Forrester report upside down, and consider the fact 20% of North American Internet users are willing to pay for content. That’s a fairly encouraging number in the wake of the widespread belief that online content should be free. The obvious question is what kind of content will people pay to…

With all the talk about social media, including growing signs there’s growing corporate interest, in climbing on the bandwagon, a question that begs to be asked is whether there are companies that shouldn’t bother with social media. While it makes complete sense for companies that sell to companies to embrace social media, what about companies that operate behind the scenes? Is social media a good idea within the B2B market? Should the hardware store down the street from my house be on Twitter or have a Facebook Page? For many companies, social media is a waste of time. The size…

One of the more interesting things to happen since the launch of ME Consulting in January has been the relatively modest amount of social media-related business. For the most part, my clients have been focused on more basic marketing and communications projects: branding and message, refreshed Web site content, new marketing collateral, and the creation of better stories that can be used to pitch the media and bloggers. This is not to suggest everyone has been ignoring social media because it has been part of the overall marketing mix, but it hasn’t been the biggest strategic priority.

Getting superior long term returns seems to take little effort. Whatever strategy you use seems to eventually work. It seems everything you buy goes down right after you buy. When you finally sell, they take off. And the…

With my debt and savings habits under control, lately my thoughts have been more so on investing strategies. One investment strategy that I believe in, as you may know, is dividend investing. Dividend investing can mean a couple things. It could include investing for yield or dividend growth. Investing for yield is simply basing purchase decisions on the dividend yield of the stock. The higher the percentage yield, the better. The Dogs of the Dow strategy comes to mind for this one. In my opinion, basing investment decisions on yield alone is a dangerous game. More times than not, an…

If you can make an effort to do this then you will save money and time.  As well, you’ll probably eat a little better, eat a wider variety of food, and you might even live a little longer. The down side is that it involves a little micromanaging, and is not the kind of subject to talk about at parties unless you want people to fall asleep in front of you. Whether you are snapping pictures of your cat, daughter or a glamorous super model the key feature in any portrait is the eyes. 1. Set your Aperture at f/2.0-5.0. This will give your portrait a nice depth of field with the eyes in focus and falling off around the hair line. If you are shooting in natural light your f-stop will be dictated by how much light you have. Just watch that if you decrease your aperture to < f/2.0 that you are able to get both eyes in focus which is tricky if your subject isn’t straight on. 2. Focus on the middle of the pupil. It’s very easy to catch…

Pure eyecandy today from a new zine that I've just fallen for called, "At Your Leisure". Created by J3PRODUCTIONS' Jonathan Lo (Happy Mundane) along with Garrison Smet, Paul Choi, Mark April and Kristen Gonzales. The first issue is a limited run of only 250 copies with a visual train of thought featuring individuals that "live what they love" and showcasing their creative spaces. The common thread in this issue is "collecting" which coincidentally works so well with this week's inspiration. They are hoping this will be the first in a series of 4. We hope so too! When you think of search engines and the Internet, it's hard not to think of Google (and not much else). When you think of Google, it's also hard not to think of the classic children's tale, The Little Engine That Could. When Sergey Brin and Larry Page incorporated Google as a business in late 1998 out of a friend's garage in Menlo Park, Calif., there is no way they could have envisioned what the company would become. Beyond being worth billions of dollars, beyond its 20,000 employees, some people don't even call it "searching" any more, they simply refer to it as…

Are you going to get the H1N1 vaccine? There are many people who are very on-the-fence about this vaccine (well, actually, all vaccines). One of the better sources that persuaded me to get the shot (got mine today) was this: World Heath Organization: Safety of pandemic (H1N1) 2009 vaccines (hat-tip to Amber MacArthur). Without going into the medical and ethical discussion about vaccines, while waiting in line for my turn to get poked (and I don't mean that in a Facebook kind of way), it got me thinking how connected Social Media and getting this vaccine are. Let's start with this: no, this…

Episode #177 of Six Pixels of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to. This is an important episode. It is not a standard episode of the Podcast, but something very different. This is a conversation with the thriller novelist, J.C. Hutchins. As Marketers, it's important to listen and learn from people like Hutchins. He's an individual who always wanted to be a published author and nothing was going to get in his way. So, after tons of rejection, he took Marketing matters into his own hands, embraced the online channel (specifically Social Media) and…

If the way in which we use the Internet (and mobile) is so different from traditional media, the advertising is going to have to change. How many times have you found yourself sitting in front of the television, watching a sub-par show and saying to yourself, "well, there's only 20 minutes left, I might as well watch and see how this turns out?" It happens all of the time. You're in the car listening to the radio just hoping that something interesting comes on, even though you've endured the same traffic and news updates multiple times in a row. Or, you keep flipping through a…

It’s sad for me to think that the last time I posted something here was over a year ago. After all of the great experiences and fun I had working on this blog, to end on such a bad note was just heartbreaking. This site, and the experiences linked with it mean too much to me to just abandon it and leave everyone in the dark as to my whereabouts and what I’m up to. But, that’s exactly what I did. And to those of you who have been to a few golf tournaments before: wouldn’t you say it’s annoying when you’re watching a particular player and 4 holes over you…

An Autralian study is showing that bad moods can actually be good for your brain.  The study from the University of New South Wales, showed that people in a negative mood were more critical of, and paid more attention to, their surroundings than happier people, who were more likely to believe anything they were told. The study also showed that positive moods seem to promote more creativity and coperation while negative moods tend to promote attentiveness and awareness of the surroundings. This seems crazy to me becuase I always feel like when I am in a bad mood I couldnt care less about…

Over the past week, I’ve been contacted about three new (or at least newish) web series. Vancouverites will recognize a bunch of locations in these first two. The first is a comedy called The Jim–here’s a teaser (rated PG for strong language): The second is The Vetala, and seems to be a bit X-Files-esque. Aesthetically, this feels heavily influenced by Battlestar Galactica. Here’s the first episode: The third is the slickest of the three, kind of a sci-fi show featuring a girl and her wolf entitled Riese. Again, the first episode–note the great costuming:…

Those are some serious anger management issues. The player’s name is Elizabeth Lambert–here’s an ESPN report (auto-playing video ahead) about the match. For the first time in a very long time, a story about architectural heritage looks like it might have a happy - and relatively swift - ending. Nearly a month ago, two WW2-era airplane hangars on what was once an active air force base in Downsview began to be demolished, but thanks to their prominent location, they got noticed by the right people. Built by De Havilland of Canada in the final years of the war, the two massive airplane hangars were once located among farms, miles away from Toronto's city limits, but today they're near the intersection of Dufferin and Sheppard streets, just north…

  • Ad Man Terry O'Reilly on Marketing Toronto, Illegal Advertising and Russell "Cashman" Oliver

    20 Nov 2009 | 6:37 am
I don't watch a lot of Citytv programming but when I do I inevitably get nailed with a Cashman commercial. You know, the one with the dancing girls, club beats and aging Russell "Cashman" Oliver wanting to trade cash for my used gold and jewellery. His ads have been running for years and actually have garnered him a fair amount of publicity including an interview on CBC last year when DC Comics sued him for one that had a Superman theme. His ads keep appearing which means they must be successful enough for him to keep paying his bills. When Terry O'Reilly, famed ad man on CBC Radio's the Age…

The Toronto Gourmet Food & Wine Show is on this weekend at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. I checked out the official opening last night, and I will say this: if you plan on attending this weekend, you better put your game face on. Between the good old fashioned grape stomp, celebrity guests on the Food Network stage, 23 tutored tasting sessions, a mixology pavilion, a Portuguese culinary extravaganza and almost 200 exhibitors there is tons to see, taste and do. More...

    20 Nov 2009 | 5:00 pm
(Repeat: Show first broadcast @ 6am PT)       Last week, I asked you all to enter The Sunshine Show Short Story Contest.  As usual, your generation continues to disappoint me.  I don't want to alienate you listeners by itemizing the many ways that you've let me down, but I do want to register at least a little consternation at your lack of gumption.  The contest continues in the hopes that you'll help me out on this.  I will read one entry on the program this week, but as will be clear, it's not very good.      Christmas shopping season is upon us and I need some extra money…
  • Technicolor Grant + Mamma Yamma Shoot New Years Special

    20 Nov 2009 | 4:50 pm
It's been quiet around the R3 office these past few days, as Grant is off in Toronto shooting with Mamma Yamma. He just sent the above image back, and I had to share, because it's kind of tripping me out a little. Not sure if it's the technicolour look of it, or the bow tie with the CBC cowichan sweater. The pic btw is from the taping of the New Year's Day Special that will feature musical guests Sloan, Kathleen Edwards, Jill Barber, and Sadie Buck. Show airs from 7am till noon on CBC TV, so either set your TIVO, or maybe just don't go to bed.

  • Looking Back @ the Past Decade in Music w/ critic Carl Wilson

    20 Nov 2009 | 1:50 pm
Coming up: Carl Wilson carl I truly was not expecting end of the decade lists until next year, but it seems many a media outlet got going quick. I’ve seen lists about people who have had a bad decade – ouch! To what you favourite movie of the oughts so-far says about you. But the one list I spent a lot of time on was the The Decades 50 Most Important Recordings from NPR. The idea behind the list is to compile not so much the best or favourite recordings, but a list of albums that “are the game-changers: records that signaled some sort of shift in the way music is made or sounds, or ones…

So you want to sell your property. All you need to do is hire a Realtor, keep your property clean at all times, and sort through the offers. Right? Wrong! Selling real estate is hard work.  These days many homes are competing against yours, and you must use every opportunity to get a jump on the competition.  Everything in your property must sparkle and work perfectly. This means no stained grout in the bathrooms, no scratched hardwood floors, and no worn-out carpeting. A person walking into your home should get a sense of grace and elegance, and the impression of a comfortable home in…
  • De Dutch Pannekoek House – 1725 Robson St.

    Len Harris
    16 Nov 2009 | 3:56 pm
It is the day before Halloween and I feel like someone is playing dirty trick on me. In my ongoing search for Vancouver’s best breakfast, I visited the De Dutch Pannekoek House at 1725 Robson Street. I thought the typical Halloween decorations were charming, but that is about all this cafe had to offer. The interior was small, with only a dozen or so tables draped in cheap looking plastic covers. However the two seat window bar seemed like a great place to sit, eat and watch the morning passerby’s on Robson Street. Eventually a glum, very unhappy looking waitress wandered over to my…

The movie stars Bradley Cooper (Faceman), Liam Neeson (Hannibal), Jessica Biel (Amy Allen), Sharlto Copley (Murdock), and UFC fighter Quinton Jackson (Baracus).  For those readers who are unfamiliar with the TV series, the plot is about a group of Iraq War veterans who, after being framed for committing a crime, attempts to clear their name with the U.S. military.

For once, short is good. Keep it short. That’s the motto of the first annual Vancouver Short Film Festival happening this October 23-24. With all the film festivals happening this month, you may have a hard time keeping track. The Vancouver Short Film Festival’s obvious difference is that it showcases short films under 15 minutes that are easy to watch in length, but make no mistake – they don’t compromise quality and story. Formerly known as the Vancouver Student Film Festival, the festival is now expanding to include a category for professional filmmakers to showcase their work.

In the last week, there have been two fires at facilities that serve women in Ottawa. The first took place on Novemer 8 at the Cornerstone Women's Shelter, where a woman died of burns. On the weekend, it appears that somebody tossed a Molotov cocktail at a women's rooming house, also in Centretown. It seems that the women in the rooming house escaped unharmed. But, as my fellow flack and blogger Ian Capstick points out, this is not only a tragedy for each and every women who was living in one of the properties; it's a tragedy for the shelter and housing system. Got pointed to this New York Times story via Xeni Jardin, writing in Boingboing. The gist, if you don't want to read the whole thing, is this:"Statements by more than a dozen lawmakers were ghostwritten, in whole or in part, by Washington lobbyists working for Genentech, one of the world’s largest biotechnology companies. E-mail messages obtained by The New York Times show that the lobbyists drafted one statement for Democrats and another for Republicans. The lobbyists, employed by Genentech and by two Washington law firms, were remarkably successful in getting the statements printed in the…

I got the chance to go on a United Way "Seeing is Believing" tour this afternoon. Here in Ottawa, the United Way raises, then distributes, nearly $32 million to agencies that deliver services to people who need them.Yesterday afternoon, I drove out to the east end of the city and met up with some other bloggers -- Lara of Gliding Through Motherhood and Zoom from Knitnut -- at the Youville Centre. The Youville Centre, ironically enough, is named in memory of a nun who lived in the 18th century. Ironic, I say, because it's a centre for teenage moms.Every year, every day, young women (under 21)…
