Yes, we know. Buying insurance sure doesn’t seem simple. Whether you’re trying to insure your life, your car or your home, it doesn’t take long before you’re drowning in sub-clauses and riders. But here’s a secret your insurance company doesn’t want you to know: beneath all of that dense jargon, there are three straightforward rules that you can apply to almost any insurance situation: Only buy insurance to protect you from unlikely events. Only buy enough insurance to maintain your existing standard of living. You don’t need insurance for events that won’t severely strain…
  • Life insurance: Is term life always enough?

    Dan Bortolotti
    27 Jan 2012 | 11:00 am
If someone you care about depends on your salary, then life insurance is not an option: it’s essential. If you die prematurely without the proper coverage, your spouse and kids may be left without any means to pay the mortgage or buy groceries. But what kind should you get? The most popular is term life: you pay a fixed premium that covers you for a specific period, usually 10 or 20 years. The other major category is called permanent life insurance, because the coverage continues for life. Within the permanent insurance category there are two types: whole life and universal life (see…

Some lessons or reminders from Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas 1 - Service design - have you taken a good look at your tourism service (all tourism businesses are service businesses) from the guests' point of view?  That's what the cruise industry seems to be doing very well. My wife and I commented how Royal Caribbean had thought of everything on the cruise we took with the family during the Holidays (see below). To analyze and assess the quality of your service, take a walk in your potential guests' shoes, from the moment they arrive, to the moment they leave. How can you make…

I hadn't been interested in a cruise vacation for over 25 years. I had only been on one cruise to the Caribbean and I didn't really like it. Mind you, I wasn't in the best state of mind at the time. Had just broken up with my girlfriend at the time and ended up going on this cruise with my Dad, my sister and her then husband. I was young and felt most of the people on the cruise where old (probably the age I am now and older). Met one young woman and hung out with her some of the time. I drank too much and ate too much in those 7 days. The ship was big, but I remember it's gym was tiny, it's…

If Stephen Harper were a character in a Hollywood epic movie about the western Canadian frontier, and went to live with the First Nations people, I can’t help but think his alternate name would be Dances With Oil. He sure doesn’t dance with the one he brings to the ball. He wants to give the appearance of listening, but he won’t because he sees First Nations as his “adversaries”. DFAIT hilariously has labeled First Nations as “adversaries” in their struggle to promote Tar Sand oil, and ship our brains out to the USA and China. The PMO calls…

Here’s a letter going to the SaskPower President soon. If anyone has any suggestions for it, you have short time to make them. rwatson at ]saskpower.com[ Dear Mr. Watson, I've found some troubling information on the SaskPower website. The first link is troubling because of what it leaves out. Solar energy, perhaps the best potential generation source of intermittent electricity, is not even considered? There's Photo Voltaic cells, solar power towers that operate with mirrors to generate heat, and net metered PV installations in operation today, and they aren't mentioned as a…

Alison Redford looks to have her first caucus defection on her hands, as former Finance Minister Lloyd Snelgrove is out, according to Redford's Chief of Staff:While losing your first MLA is never fun, this shouldn't dampen Redford's momentum or end her honeymoon. After all, Snelgrove has been critical of Redford since she was elected leader, and announced he wouldn't be running again shortly after he was left out of her first Cabinet. Just yesterday, he criticized Redford's province-wide listening tour - when an MLA criticizes his leader for something as innocuous as that, you know he's…
  • This Week in Alberta - Flanagan Gets Back in the Saddle

    27 Jan 2012 | 10:00 am
With an Alberta election on the horizon this spring, the Wildrose Alliance have brought on Tom Flanagan to manage their campaign. For those of you who have never heard of Tom Flanagan, he was a political science professor at the University of Calgary (go Dinos!), and a key Harper strategist during his leadership run. Flanagan was the Conservative campaign manager in the 2004 federal election, so I can only hope it wasn't his idea to hold a "victory march" across Alberta in the campaign's closing weekend.Since his exit from politics, Flanagan has writen a well-received book and several candid…
  • Advice from South of the Border

    25 Jan 2012 | 3:00 pm
The Liberal convention earlier this month grabbed a lot of headlines - Mike Crawley's 26-vote victory over Sheila Copps for party President, the party's move to the supporter system, the decision to, like, totally legalize marijuana. As important as those events were, the real work of rebuilding the party will happen behind the scenes. That's why one of my convention highlights was the talk by a pair of Obama operatives, Rich Mintz and Tom McMahon. I'll confess I often skip these convention workshops since many are nothing more than "so you should all sign up for this Twitter thing" - but the…
  • Drugs, Drugs, Drugs. Which are good, which are bad?

    23 Jan 2012 | 8:00 am
The marijuana legalization policy, which passed at last weekend's Liberal convention, has been generating a fair amount of media buzz this past week. The strongest arguments in favour of it come, somewhat surprisingly, from this National Post editorial and Toronto Sun column, while this Globe article raises some legitimate questions about the feasibility of legalization. There are many logistical hurdles to overcome, but I tend to think one of the many alcohol and cigarette distribution systems we use could be adapted to marijuana. Once a mechanism is settled on and border issues with the…
  • Revisiting Staggered Primaries

    19 Jan 2012 | 1:00 pm
After looking at how the supporter system was conceived yesterday, today I gaze ahead at what its future might hold. Specifically, the musings of some that the LPC could still hold staggered primaries, even though a motion to do this fell short of the 2/3 majority needed to pass at the Liberal convention this weekend. The argument goes that the party didn't need a constitutional amendment to hold a staggered primary since the National Board has the right to "set the date" of the vote, and in past leadership contests this has given them the flexibility to select multiple dates over the same…

What’s your wow factor? What impresses, captivates or even blows people away when they experience your product for the first time? It’s a question startups need to ask themselves in a world in which first impressions can mean everything. With all due to respect to the growing legion of minimal viable product (MVP) disciples, one of the most crucial things for startups is giving users something different, compelling or interesting so they stick around or, as important, they’re willing to give you a second chance. For startups, wow can happen in different ways. It can be a…

A couple of weeks ago, David Crow had a post in StartupNorth about the importance and challenging that startups face when it comes to hiring. The post came to mind during a conversation with a startup entrepreneur looking to aggressively hire. A key point was how hiring has to be seen as a strategic rather than administrative process. It makes sense given how a bad hire can penalize a lean and mean startup that needs to operate as efficiently and effectively as possible. As much as startups recognize the importance of making good hiring decisions, the reality is the process can be…

The bad news is a key part of the deal is the product you’ve been nurturing, growing and pouring your heart and soul into will be shut down as part of the deal. Welcome to the exciting world of team-buying in which the acquirer has far more interest in the people who built the product than the product itself. Case in point is Twitter’s purchase of Vancouver-based Summify last week. Twitter essentially bought co-founders Mircea Pasoi and Christian Strat and the Summify team, while blowing off the service, which used social data to…

American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) are securities of non-US corporations that trade in the US stock markets.  Individual shares of such foreign securities represented by ADRs are called as American Depositary Shares. ADRs are created when a broker purchases shares of a non-US corporation on its home stock exchange and transfers them to a local custodian bank, which issues the receipts. ADRs provide North American investors the means to buy shares in a foreign company such as those listed in the UK, China, or France to name but a few. These ADRs, denominated in US dollars, are traded similar…

How's that user experience working out for you? I often ridicule the masses (I know, that's very snide of me). When computers were first introduced the mantra was that, "screens are not easy to read or work on." Forget the fact that many dismissed the power of a mobile phone ("is your life that important that you need to make calls when you're not at home or at the office?"), and let's not forget the many people who would often say, "I could never type with my thumbs." To this day, there are still people who don't see the value in platforms like Facebook, YouTube…

Do you have a morbid fascination with the end? I'm not sure why (but I'm pretty certain that a psychiatrist would love to figure it out of with me), but I often think about the end. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm scared about how my life will end (which is in direct relation with the many issues I have around control) and that I don't want it to end any time soon. There are plenty more things that I want to accomplish in my life and I often play the "which would you rather game" when it comes to deciding between family and the rest of my life (in case you're wondering, family…

Is it just a question of getting the facts straight when it comes to our media? What Blogging brought forth is the notion that opinion lies neatly next to news (and that it is sometimes very difficult to tell the difference between the two). In fact, it's worth arguing that opinion is the new news. Without looking at the political sphere for examples (you get more than enough of that here on The Huffington Post and on other websites, news outlets and Blogs),what does it take create great media? The heart of the matter. Emotion is key to driving interest. Human beings are creatures of habits.

I've been thinking a lot about thinking lately. I know, that's very "meta" of me. When was the last time you spent five minute thinking about not only how you learn, but where it's all taking place? People often laugh when they hear that I am reading all of my books exclusively on my iPhone with the Amazon Kindle and Apple iBooks apps. In fact, most people scoff at the notion (as if I'm doing some kind of retinal damage or that it's heresy). The truth is that technology has not only facilitated our ability to learn but it has sped it up. I read over thirty books last year,…

  • The first ever reality TV show?

    Darren
    22 Jan 2012 | 11:20 pm
I’ve been on a bit of a documentary kick lately, and recently discovered Living in the Past. One of the first reality TV shows, it was a 12-episode BBC series which documented the experience of 15 young Britons living for a year as Iron Age men and women. They built their own houses, grew their own food, slaughtered their own animals and so forth. I watched a kind of one-hour summary of the show courtesy of a BBC4 show called What Happened Next? I guess when you’re as big and old as the Beeb, you can produce a show that’s entirely about the future of other past shows. In any…

I like online satire. The technology world takes itself pretty seriously, and deserves its fair share of skewering. When it’s done correctly, satire doesn’t have to be mean-spirited. It’s cutting, and pokes gentle fun at the ideas and projects we may be taking too seriously. Pinterest.com has exploded onto the start-up scene. In the current parlance, it’s a “push-button curation” site. A cousin to Tumblr, you use Pinterest to collect images from the web and ‘pin’ them to ‘boards’. To me, it’s mostly Delicious for pictures or…

    13 Jan 2012 | 12:16 am
“Stop Making Sense”, Jonathan Demme’s groundbreaking Talking Heads documentary, begins with lead singer David Byrne walking onto a bare stage, carrying a ghetto blaster and an acoustic guitar. We can see rigging and ladders against the stage’s brightly-lit back wall as Byrne begins “Psycho Killer”. He accompanies himself on guitar and, apparently, a percussion loop on the ghetto blaster. Other musicians join Byrne throughout the set, and eventually screens are lowered to conceal the rear wall of the stage. I thought about Byrne’s “Psycho…

I recently finished reading Michael Ondaatje’s excellent The Cat’s Table. It tells the story of a boy’s journey (ostensibly, but not actually, Ondaatje himself–he’s a notorious liar in such things) by ocean liner from Colombo, Ceylon (known today as Sri Lanka) to London, England. I quite enjoyed the novel–much more than Anil’s Ghost and Divisadero, and would recommend it. This was the first ebook I’d ever read, as it happens. I read it on the iPad, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to include an annotated map with the text. There are…

  • City releases plans for separated Sherbourne bike lane

    27 Jan 2012 | 3:17 pm
Toronto is finally getting separated bike lanes, and now we have a pretty good idea of what they're going to look like. Unveiled at an open house yesterday, the plans for separated cycling infrastructure on Sherbourne Street should be realized by fall 2012 — at which time, you know, Jarvis is slated to lose its bike lanes. For now, let's take a quick look at the main features of the new lanes. Perhaps the most interesting tidbit that was revealed last night is that the infrastructure will take different forms on either side of Gerrard Street. To the north the lanes will be separated by…

After 35 years in service, the Hawker-Siddely H4 subway car made its last trip along the Bloor-Danforth subway line this morning before it heads to the scrap yard. Although perhaps not the most significant event, a host of transit fanatics and photographers were on board for last rites. Commuters, on the other hand, will likely be thankful that the H4 is being retired before another summer arrives. The combination of a lack of air conditioning and padded vinyl seats was a bit deadly on the hottest of days. The the last TTC subway car with fan coils, orange seating, and yellow doors,…

listen Hey, it's that other Canadian songstress singing about numbers! "One Two Three", from Jennifer Castle's 2008 album Castlemusic, is an understated affair. Spare piano chords and a haunting vocal are the only ingredients here, and it's a wise move - in the absence of more instrumentation, every creak of the piano bench takes on a new importance. It's an intimate performance that gives the sense of sitting on the piano bench next to Castle as she plays.

Daptone has a history of releasing some killer funk and soul records that really capture the vintage sound of soul music from the late 60s and early 70s. Jones has a classic vintage sound — even though her first full album was recorded less than a decade ago.  Then there’s Charles Bradley. He was born in 1948, but released his first album just last year. He’d been doing a James Brown routine using a broom handle as a mic for decades. But after years of hardship,…

I was watching my local newscast the other night when I watched a story about a local — and legendary — butcher shop. Aubrey’s Meats is over 100 years old, and located in the Byward Market, one of Ottawa’s oldest areas. This may be one of its problems, actually. The Market, as it’s known to us Ottawans, is usually packed with a combination of tourists in search of the right tchotchke to take home to a coworker or maiden aunt and young revelers heading to The Heart and Crown or the Chateau Lafayette to get their drink on. If I’m gonna buy some steaks or a…

He had a scan of it saved on his iPad and showed it to the border officer. “There was a slight hesitation, he didn’t really seem like he was…

Canadians may have spent the past few weeks dreaming of a white Christmas, but the Weather Network said most would be wise for many to shelve their visions of a winter wonderland for another year. Unseasonably mild, dry conditions across the country will keep the snow at bay in most major centres, the forecaster said, adding it’s a pattern that’s persisted through most of the month. Weather network meteorologist Chris Scott said the month of December has seen unusual conditions prevail from coast to coast. Temperatures have hovered around average levels for coastal B.C., but the…

Clearly, the fashion icon knows something about shopping. When Beker isn’t globetrotting for FashionTelevision or covering fashion runways for magazines like FT, she’s at home in Toronto. The call for more retail explorations beckons and Beker answers. She does admit she has a thing for shoes, so Davids on Bloor Street and their huge selection of Christian Louboutin shoes (the best in Canada) is a big draw.

This was the year that I vowed I would purposely do something about my health. I’ve gained a lot of weight from my two pregnancies and I’ve become somewhat sedentary, and I have a lot of life left to live both with my girls and for myself. My biggest hurdle to overcome is time and presence. I can’t afford a lot of extra time in my day to day routines on my own, so the travel time to and from workouts would have to be minimal or nonexistent. My workout during the week would need to be done after our daughters’ bed time routines, and I would prefer to be within earshot…

    23 Jan 2012 | 6:30 am
Today is Chinese New Year, and it is the Year of the Dragon. We are currently teaching our daughter about different languages and cultures. Since she is only 3.5 years old, we have been keeping the lessons light. We tell her that there are many different languages other than what she speaks. We talk about places that are far away from us, and we celebrate other cultural holidays and meals. I love when holidays like Chinese New Year roll around because it is another opportunity to open her up to the many cultures that make our world a wonderful place to live. If you would like to celebrate…

Guh. It is so embarrassing to admit this, but I have an irrational fear of zombies. Yes, I know zombies don’t exist; I said ‘irrational’ didn’t I? My top three fears (in order) are: 1) something happening to my kids or husband 2) zombies 3) natural disaster I know this isn’t right. Not only did I put zombies as my number two worst fear, but I also didn’t even list an actual real life disease outbreak in there. It isn’t the gore that goes along with eating brains that I hate. I find that part kind of entertaining. I guess you can say I have a kind of…

    Newfoundland Labrador Blog Roll

    22 Jan 2012 | 5:53 pm
After spending a good portion of my afternoon yesterday finally getting the category pages redesigned and promoting each of the winners in the 2011 Blogger's Choice awards, I came to realize that the blog for the crowned champion of the Political / Commentary section was no longer loading. After contacting the owner, I was told that due to her now being employed by Liberal Party of Newfoundland Labrador, that she was ordered ('as standard practice': read more here on Geoff Meeker's blog) to delete her blog entirely. If only I made it simple and excluded the points system this would be no sweat but, with the 3 tiered system in place, the nominees are going to have to hang tight while I get this done. What's a voting session without some tension as we wait right? :) Hang in there folks, the winners will be unveiled next week! In…
