  • Keeping your head up while drowning in debt

Question My wife and I have two kids and we are both students. We have been unable to make payments on certain debts and as a result around $7,800 has been turned over to collections. Besides this debt, we owe $7,000 on our car, plus we have student loans, which luckily don’t have to be paid until after graduation. How much of a hit to our future are we taking by keeping this $7,800 in collections? It’s unrealistic for us to pay this debt off until after we graduate and find jobs. We would like to own a house someday, but I’m scared this debt will damage our credit report and that we…
  • Getting a divorce? Think about the house

    16 May 2012 | 4:00 am
My husband and I have an agreement: If either one of us is unfaithful to our marriage vows that person walks away with nothing. Absolutely nothing. No car, no kids, no house. Nadda. And yes: we shook on it. We also meant it and, despite how ridiculous this gentleman’s agreement may appear to be, we share this story with family and friends, with full knowledge that our handshake would never stand up in a court of law, if it came to that. But in era where almost half of marriages end in divorce, it was our way of trying, in a humourous way, to acknowledge that divorce and property is a messy…

There are four new and important changes every Canadian with a financial adviser—or anyone thinking of hiring one—should know about. Regulators officially ushered in the Client Relationship Model (CRM) earlier this spring making it mandatory for financial advisers to fully disclose all transaction details, commission and fee breakdowns as well as annualized rates of return. Until now, advisers were only required to provide book and market value updates for client portfolios. (MoneySense’s Dan Bortolotti and Preet Banerjee recently published a free, downloadable rate of return calculator…

    15 May 2012 | 10:25 pm
In a recent column, The Globe & Mail’s Rob Carrick (see Beware the limitations of buying the index, May 11, 2012) pointed out that investing in just the TSX Composite index might leave an investor with an unbalanced portfolio because of the index’s concentration in just three sectors: financials, energy and materials. The criticism is a valid one because, as you can see from the chart below, resource companies make up more than half the index and financials make up another one-third of the index. (As an aside, the sector breakdown of the S&P/TSX 60 index, which is tracked by the…

  • Canada is falling behind in Tourism. But early 2012 shows hopeful signs

According to the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, Canada is falling behind in tourism rankings, international visits and income: "Between 2002 and 2010, almost all countries posted international tourist arrivals gains – except Canada. This means that strong brand interest is just not converting into arrivals. Who wouldn't want to come here? We are blessed with the basics: Unique natural vistas, safe and inviting cities, renowned festivals and attractions… but the basics are not enough in this increasingly competitive sector. Like all other export consumers, the burgeoning…

Finance Minister, the Hon. Jim Flaherty, tabled the Federal Government's budget 2012 and it's not very good for the 600,000+ Canadians that work in the tourism industry (investments in Quebec notwithstanding - more on that in my next post). 1 - according to the Tourism Industry Association of Canada - the CTC will see a small cut to it's budget this year, but a substantial cut of $14.2 million in 2013/2014. The CTC is underfunded as it is, so this does not bode well for Canada's tourism profile internationally. Without sustained and predictable funding, it is very difficult to plan long term…

    15 May 2012 | 1:48 am
The Oklahoma City Thunder versus the Los Angeles Lakers is the series everyone has been waiting for in the Western Conference. However, despite the hype, Game 1 turned out to be a laugher. The Thunder got up early and then destroyed the Lakers by a final score of 119-90. Russell Westbrook was the player of the game, scoring 27 points, dishing out nine assists and puling down seven rebounds in only 27 minutes of play. He hit 10-of-15 shots from the field and only turned the ball over once. The big run by the Thunder happened in the third quarter. With OKC already up by 15 points at the half,…

The Miami Heat are the favorites to win the NBA championship. However, their chances took a hit when Chris Bosh got injured in Game 1 of the Heat’s series against the Indiana Pacers. Although the Heat were able to win the game, they have lost Bosh to an abdominal strain. While the team hasn’t given a specific timetable yet, they are saying that Bosh is out indefinitely. If you read between the lines, it sounds like Bosh will miss the rest of this series against the Pacers. “This season has to be extended for me to play again,” said Bosh. “That’s…

That player was Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers, who did it Tuesday night against the Baltimore Orioles. All four of Hamilton’s homers were two-run shots. Said Hamilton after the game: “Obviously it’s, other than being in the World Series, the highlight of my big-league career.” Hamilton’s home runs came in the first inning, third inning, seventh inning and eighth inning. He also added a double in the fourth inning. For the game, Hamilton was 5-for-5 with four runs and…

Apparently Rajon Rondo didn’t want to be on camera and went to the cameraman and told him to his face. You can watch the Rajon Rondo cameraman video below to see how it unfolded. The Celtics ended up losing to the Hawks, with Rondo failing to come through on the final play. The Hawks were up one and Rondo couldn’t get a good look for himself or a teammate and the Celtics were defeated. I’m assuming that’s part of the reason why Rajon Rondo…

Guys, Regarding the SG2100, I've seen a few motors installed upside down (ie- some do this to gain an extra 3-4 inches). when its inverted, does the receiver "somehow" detect it and its business as usual, or do we have to inverse East as West and vice versa on the motor controls? If the receiver does not detect it, I suppose USUALS is useless and manually entering each sat is the way to go. Also, what is the max weight? My spec sheet just says 1.2M dish is the max. Anyone have experience w/ an upside down motor? Cheers, J

Prior to this, Rogers business customers would require a multi-line terminal, which broke out the trunk into individual…

In fact, she even apologized to me about how she hesitated with her client and was worried there would be repercussions. Just recently, I finished the New York…

With the public paper trail cold for almost two months, there’s still little that’s certain in the Elections Canada investigation[...] Alison’s preemptive retort says it best: The trail is not so much…

Gormley was critical of the bad language in Gunderson’s videos. I don’t care for foul language in most music either, but at least Gormley has a valid excuse for acting like a crotchety old man; I don’t know what my problem is. I do love Dirty Spaceman, however. And I wish UMG would screw off and accept a parody that uses some of their video, but has different lyrics and music is not copyright infringement. It’s 2012, not the stone age. Oh, wait, scratch that, C-11 is passing. Don’t let Gotye kick your monkey, or anywhere near your goat. He’s a Wookie…

There’s an interesting glimpse into how the Conservatives get around that pesky no-corporate donations rule. While it could be a co-incidence that people swept up in an investigation into crooked building shenanigans in Quebec just happen to be large Conservative Party donors, the cynic in me wonders why someone would pick $666.66 as a donation value too. There are legitimate reasons I’m sure. Maybe they just happened to have $2000 to donate to their favourite causes, and divided it equally to give to their favourite three (before being charged with criminal activity). A special…

(Liveblog notes, but no wifi to upload in real time so this is a deadblogging instead.) First attempt at council being paperless. When we entered the chamber we were all handed a paper package. Paperless fail. Still, good an effort is being made with their iPads. City Manager Davies asked their iPad techie Jonathan to not tweet during the meeting, jokingly. First up is talk of a dog park in industrial park. Seems like an okay placement to me. It would be nicer if it were closer to residential housing so it wouldn’t require motor vehicle access for the majority of users. In the planning…

Take a look at what also happened to swing the election in key ridings for the Conservatives. Harassing phone calls pretending to be from Liberals, and plenty of voters voting without the documentation to prove they were citizens or lived in the riding. To date, the Etobicoke case has revealed a tangled tale of sloppy paperwork, some of which is ascribed to a natural instinct on the part of Elections Canada officials to facilitate voting, rather than to obstruct it with red tape. But, still: a whole range of problems has turned up which seem to push the boundaries of what’s normal. And…

  • The Third Way

    16 May 2012 | 8:00 am
The latest Ipsos poll paints a rather dreary picture of Liberal fortunes, with what was once the natural governing party languishing more than 15 points behind both the NDP and the Conservatives.Of course, the NDP are in their post-leadership honeymoon, the Liberals don't have a permanent leader, and a horse race poll when politics is the farthest thing from the electorate's mind won't tell you a lot. But I think we can safely assume the Liberals are a distant third, trailing two parties who are both intent on hugging the centre of the road, making it almost impossible to pass them. So what's…
  • An update on all the people MAYBE running for Liberal leadership

    8 May 2012 | 9:00 am
The expectation is that rules for the Liberal leadership race will come down in June, setting the stage for a summer of getting to know the men and women wanting to lead Canada's third party. But while we won't know the rules of the race for another month or two, that hasn't limited speculation in the interim...or speculation about the interim leader, for that matter.Back in January, I looked at the ten most commonly rumoured Liberal leadership candidates...and 18 fun longshots - the Naheed Nenshis and Amanda Langs of the world. Today, an update on the names that were most on the lips of…

Back in February I asked readers of this blog who they thought would run for Liberal leader, and who they'd consider voting for. Admittedly, this is as far from a scientific poll as you'll ever get, and I won't pretend that the 500+ voters in this straw poll are all Liberals. But we're not going to see anything resembling a credible Liberal leadership poll for close to a year, so let's have a little fun with what we've got. Before that, one other thing. It looks like a group of Borys Wrzesnewskyj supporters swarmed the poll late, so I've excluded Borys from my recap below. Mind you, the fact…

For startups, attracting a user (free or paid) can be a huge challenge and an accomplishment given their fickleness and the intense competition. It means having strong messaging about what the product does, the value propositions and benefits, and then making sure enough people become aware of it through different marketing and sales channels. There’s a lot of moving parts to win over a customer. The problem for many companies, including startups, is their marketing efforts stop once the user is registered and/or the sale is completed. All the marketing work to get someone to learn…

  • Why Startups Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Sell

    Mark Evans
    11 May 2012 | 6:30 am
I like startups that sell a product. It means they’re operating a business that hinges on getting consumers to spend money as opposed to offering a product that enough people will like that it magically delivers a way to generate revenue. In my opinion, too many startups are afraid to sell their products. They’re afraid there’s too much competition, they’re afraid not enough consumers will be willing to pay for it,  and they’re afraid of not getting the traction to attract investors or an acquirer. Instead, they take the easy way out by offering their product…

Most of us would probably buy at least one house during our lifetime. For some, buying a home is a dream; for some, it is a definition of their success in society; for some, it is simply a shelter where they don’t have to pay rent. No matter the justification, when a person starts to think about buying a home, it is prudent to conduct a self-evaluation to see if they are financially ready to get their feet wet in home ownership. This post looks at some of the key aspects that may be worth considering before taking the leap. Consumer debt If a person is riding the debt wave well by…

The spring rains took a brief pause over the weekend, and I spent a happy, sunny Saturday afternoon with my family at the Austin Mini Maker Faire. If you haven't heard of it, Maker Faire started in San Mateo back in 2006 - bringing together makers, tinkerers, artists, inventors and families - all in celebration of the flourishing Maker movement. Can you sum up your professional you in one or two words? I was very touched watching the documentary, Being Elmo, on PBS' Independent Lens. The movie is about Kevin Clash (the puppeteer behind Sesame Street's Elmo). From a very young age, Clash demonstrated a strong desire to be a puppeteer. While that seems quaint and points to someone who was focused on what they wanted to do in life from a very young age, you can imagine the struggles he faced growing up in Baltimore. While all of the other kids were out playing baseball or causing mischief, Clash was at home sewing puppets together and…

Every so often, I see a video, usually from a research lab, that demonstrates some new technology. It’s typically kind of mundane, with banal camera work, titles from Windows Movie Maker and monotone, academic narration. And yet it feels like I’m watching science fiction. I experience some combination of awe and creepiness, like I’m peeking into the future. I usually utter “holy crap” under my breath. UPDATE: Here are the slightly revised slides  (PDF) I presented today, in PDF format. This morning I gave a talk entitled “Trackbacked: A decade of social media” at the iMedia conference in Edmonton. I was intentional in choosing that title, as the term ‘trackback’ (replaced, I suppose, by the likes of ‘reblog’ and ‘repin’) has disappeared from common usage as quickly as it appeared. The talk is a meandering look back at the last 10 years of social media, and some of the lessons I’ve learned there-in. As I sometimes do, I created a…
  • Officially legit in Montpellier

    Darren
    3 May 2012 | 7:29 pm
A couple of weeks ago, Julie and I hopped on a train for the 45 minute ride to Montpellier. While we planned to stay over night and explore the charming old town, our main purpose was to visit L’Office Francais de l’Immigration et de L’Integration (OFII). A successful visit would mean that we were officially legal in the eyes of the French government, and were permitted to spend the year here. The OFII represented the final step in a process that began in the fall of 2011, when we began assembling documents to apply for a long-term stay visa. As you’d expect, the…
  • Media and blogger predictions for the first round of the playoffs

    Darren
    10 Apr 2012 | 2:35 pm
For the average hockey fan, the days between the regular season and the playoffs are torture. There’s  very little news, as teams are more secretive than ever about line-ups, injuries and the like. All the media can do is sit around and make predictions. All fans can do is read and ruminate on those predictions. I started a spreadsheet that shows all the media and hockey blogger predictions I could find. I’ve made it editable by anybody, so that should others discover predictions, they can add them to the document. I’m currently up to around 450 individual picks from nearly…
  • In praise of walking

    Darren
    8 Apr 2012 | 3:59 pm
For the past decade, I’ve been able to walk to my work. 10 years ago, that commute was a half-an-hour jaunt across the centre of Dublin. Since 2007, we’ve worked from home, and so my walk to work has been measured in seconds. When I can walk to work, I find that most of my other needs fall within walking distance, too. Whether we’re living in Victoria, Malta or Victoria, BC, groceries, restaurants, medical services and the like have just been a stroll away. When we can, we plan our living circumstances around this proximity, and I’m the happier for it. As I think about…

  • How to be delayed at Pearson airport in style (video)

    16 May 2012 | 12:42 pm
If you're in the Toronto-based Lemon Bucket Orkestra, you break out the instruments and start an impromptu gig. This video posted to YouTube today shows the self-described Balkan/Gypsy/Klezmer band entertaining anxious passengers on board a delayed Air Canada flight from Pearson to Bucharest, Romania. I'm not sure how the band managed to get a trombone, sax, violin, clarinet, accordion and several other instruments into the cabin when I can't bring on a tube of toothpaste, but who cares. Air Canada should make sure all delays play out like this. (Thanks to stephturkie on Reddit for sharing)
  • A trip to the gas station in Toronto was once pure joy

    16 May 2012 | 12:29 pm
One of Toronto's stranger relics from the 1930s, the last remaining Joy Oil gas station is back in the news — though sadly only because there still isn't anything to report about what will ultimately become of the building. The Post's Peter Kuitenbrouwer outlines the predictable but frustrating bureaucratic process that's left the quirky landmark on Lake Shore Avenue West in a state of limbo since it was relocated and restored five years ago. Setting aside the delays in determining the future use of the former gas station, the good news is that the building isn't going anywhere. This…

  • Glenn Gould Prize Gala honours Leonard Cohen at Massey Hall

    16 May 2012 | 11:15 am
Leonard Cohen was honoured as the Ninth Laureate of the Glenn Gould Prize at a music-filled gala at Massey Hall on Monday night. The $50,000 prize, awarded every two years, gives recognition to an individual who has made a lifelong contribution to improving the human condition through music and communication. Cohen chose the Canada Council for the Arts as the recipient of the award. As part of the prize, Cohen, now 77, also selected Parkdale-based Sistema Toronto as the recipient of the $15,000 Glenn Gould Protégé Prize. What a class act. The evening featured performances of his songs by…

The best Indian restaurants in Mississauga uphold the delicious and versatile aspects of that can be found from the bustling streets of Delhi to the overcrowded hawker stands in Mumbai. Here, each Indian restaurant has a distinct aura about it (trust me, I'm Indian) and suburban Indian cuisine, while not as easily accessible as Toronto's Gerrard Street, represents the Indian diaspora that stretches throughout the city. Here is my list of the best Indian restaurants in Mississauga. See also: The best Chinese restaurants in Mississauga The best Indian restaurants in Toronto The best Indian…

  • Rodrigo Munoz and Papa Mambo deliver salsa, Winnipeg style

    16 May 2012 | 1:43 pm
Rodrigo Muñoz is a legend in Winnipeg, known for tearing up the dance floor with his salsa moves and for grooving onstage with hot percussion and guitar. Muñoz, who landed in Winnipeg in 1975 when he was 12 years old, his family escaping the political turmoil of Chile, turns 50 this year. He celebrated with a salsa party featuring his band, Papa Mambo. "I love music because it grabs me in three parts of my body," Muñoz told CBC's Manitoba Scene. "My brain; my heart and my gut, which is the middle part; and all the way downstairs to my pelvis. It has everything in it. It has the…
  • CBC Music listeners really 'like' Dan Mangan

    16 May 2012 | 1:00 pm
Dan Mangan is one of the best new Canadian artists right now. And we're not the only ones who say that. The Junos said it. And so did you. Over the past week, Dan Mangan received the most new fans on CBC Music. That means people "liked" him more than anyone else. They did that by clicking the little "thumbs up" icon on his page. Not only does that tell us who people really dig right now, but you benefit too. First off, whenever that artist uploads new music or adds concert listings, you find out about it. They also get added to your handy-dandy "like" list, which you can find on your own…

It is essential that corporate Canada takes notice and invests in a new strategic approach in their multicultural marketing efforts (read: "ethnic marketing") to effectively reach these communities.

    Bob LeDrew
    11 May 2012 | 1:40 pm
One of the things I love more than anything about social media is the testability and measurability of social media campaigns and tools. From Google Analytics to SocialMention to Bitly to Facebook Page Insights and onward, there are a host of great tools out there that let you do everything from finetune your online ad copy and images to make the search engine bots happy and welcome on your page to understand who’s coming to your site and how they get there. Of course, the next step in understanding how people are coming to your site is to start thinking about whether you can fine-tune…
  • SMB 101 Post #3: When someone complains, respond

    Bob LeDrew
    4 May 2012 | 11:32 am
Last week, I was challenged to write about the wisdom (or lack thereof) of people blocking or ignoring their online critics. This week, I’m going to give you a few tips about how to deal with online criticisms of your business. No business pleases everyone. And now, displeased customers can complain in public. Sometimes with lots of people watching. And when that happens, what do you do?! CC licenced from Flickr user Gordon2208 Shockingly enough, many companies are choosing to ignore online complaints. Look at this blog post by Jay Baer, based on research published in September 2011.
  • SMB101 Post #2: The myth of engagement.

    Bob LeDrew
    27 Apr 2012 | 9:16 am
It’s a real pleasure to get a request for a post. So when I got one asking for one called “The Myth of Engagement,” how could I not respond? The crux of the request was:  I am so tired of hearing about how people who Tweet are engaging their audiences. In fact, many don’t actually engage but just push out info in a one-way channel. And how do they deal with anyone who challenges them? Easy, they just use that trusty block feature. In my book, you take the good with the bad and that’s the way actual Twitter engagement happens.  My esteemed correspondent was talking about…
  • Social media, “third parties”, and not-for-profits

    Bob LeDrew
    26 Apr 2012 | 10:33 am
I tend to end up volunteering for a lot of stuff. Part of it is because I have a hard time saying no to good causes, part of it because I enjoy doing the work, part of it because it makes me feel good to help, part of it because often it’s friends asking, and part of it because I might learn something or hang out with cool people. For many of us, the old models of service clubs and voluntarism seem... prehistoric. One of the things I think has been changed most fundamentally by social media is the relationship between not-for-profit organizations and people wishing to do good things for…

I was unplugging a phone charger this morning, when I looked at the outlet. What did I see? One of those. Except mine was full. Then I realized that most of my outlets, instead of just having two things plugged into them, had one of these plugged in, so I could plug SIX things into them. In some cases, one of those might be a power bar, meaning there might be 11 separate things going into that electrical outlet (by the way, did you know that the standard electrical outlet, with its three prongs, is called a NEMA 5? Specifically a NEMA 5-15R? Me either). And thankfully, the picture of a truly…

This past weekend I took the plunge and began the cleaning process to turn a guest room in to a new office area for myself. I need the space and I hate it when a room just doesn’t seem to have a purpose, like this one lacked. My favorite part is the decorating and the moment I get to sit down, once it is all done, and take everything in. I love that feeling of accomplishment. The part that is the least enjoyable for me is the starting and the cleaning. Cleaning out a room that we once used to store everything that had no home is daunting. It means that we now need to tackle the question…

  • Calgary housing sales rise 30.3 per cent in April

    buzzhomeblog

Oil prices are rising, people are moving to Alberta, and the housing market is heating up. With population growth topping 47 per cent between 1996 and 2011, Calgary is definitely a market to watch. Despite the dip in oil prices in 2008, which caused a slight stall in the market, it appears Cowtown is back on the up-and-up — in a big way. Nationally, home sales were 11.5 per cent in April 2012 on a year-over-year basis. In the same period in Calgary, though, the number of home sales increased to 2,720 from 2,087. That represents a staggering 30.3 per cent increase. So, hold onto your…

  • Blog of the Week : 05/13 - 05/19 2012

    13 May 2012 | 10:57 am
The Blog of the Week for May 13th to the 19th, 2012 is 'St. John's Mom' and I guess it's only fitting that I would choose a Mom's blog for the selection today, this being Mother's Day and all. Well it wasn't as simple as just selecting a 'Mom's Blog' because there are several of them listed on the BlogRoll and all are equally lovely. What jumped out at me with this particular one was the wealth of information contained within. It's jam packed with articles targeted towards families and all are tightly knit within an eye appealing design, headlined by a beautiful shot of St.
  • Blog of the Week Returns Sunday

    11 May 2012 | 3:33 pm
As declared in my previous post, the Blog of the Week initiative will return in just 2 days. I have to say, I'm quite excited to finally be returning to this. It's an aspect of the site that I was always fond of doing each week, as it was one that helped expose me personally to a lot of great blogs. I'm glad that I finally have things reorganized around here so that I can get back at visiting and selecting, especially considering all the incredible blogs I noticed while visiting during that reorganization. I'm definitely going to have difficult times choosing the weekly…
  • What's on the Horizon

    6 May 2012 | 8:24 am
Now that the large task of updating the lists have been taken care of, time is now available for some other clean-up items and initiatives. Here's an outlook on what's on the horizon for the NL BlogRoll.Blog of the Week ReturnsAfter a very long run of consecutive blog's selected weekly last year, a long hiatus from the Blog of the Week initiative persisted. It began with needing the time to focus on the Blogger's Choice Awards, but later it became more about timing. Well now the timing for a return is just about right, and a return we will!Beginning  next Sunday (May…
  • Numerous Newbies

    27 Apr 2012 | 4:03 pm
As I briefly mentioned in the previous post, there has been a number of new additions to the BlogRoll recently. This has been a tremendously long time coming, which is perhaps why there are so many new additions this time around. In the several months since the last update, over 60 new blogs have been located and now listed. Most of these new additions are requests to be added (and I do so apologize for your wait!) but some are just random ones I've found in my travels. All are welcome additions of course. Each have been added to the applicable rolls found on this page and to the seperate…
  • Surprise Spring Cleaning

    26 Apr 2012 | 4:26 pm
What started as an attempt to add newly collected blog's, ended up being a full blown spring cleaning session. This was not something that I had in mind to do, but unfortunate circumstances forced the extra work upon me. In the end though, I think what resulted from the unfortunate times was a revitalized hub, making the work all the worthwhile. It all began when I went to add newbies to the main list and the system wouldn't let me. I tried many things to rectify the situation up to and including a restart from scratch of a whole new list. It wasn't until I added about 180 blog's to that…

  • Calgary housing sales rise 30.3 per cent in April

    buzzhomeblog
    16 May 2012 | 10:11 am

It would be hard to find a new Toronto development that has generated as much buzz in 2012 as Canary District. Situated at Front and Cherry Streets in the West Donlands, Canary District will be a part of the 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games Athletes Village. It will become Toronto’s largest urban village and if you ask us, the location couldn’t be any better. The development, a collaboration between Dundee Kilmer and Waterfront Toronto, broke ground on May 15 to much fanfare. We were there to catch all the action, which included great speeches by Bruce Kuwabara of renowned…

If you’re at all familiar with Toronto’s booming condo market, you may have heard the name “The Condo Kings” around the city. But the trio of brothers have a new attention grabber that will ensure that if you haven’t heard of them before, you sure will know who they are now. The Condos Kings are a group of sales representatives that have been in the business for the past 18 years and are currently the #4 Team in Canada for Coldwell Banker. One of The Condo Kings specialties is (you guessed it) condo sales. Among their recent acquisitions is a decked out, ultra-renovated…

  • What is HTML5?

    Admin-Katherine
    16 May 2012 | 7:00 am
http://www.flickr.com/photos/acebal Since the original HTML was invented with the web over 20 years ago, it has gone through many updates, but its been more than a decade since the last one, and in web terms that’s pretty much forever. HTML has been a few steps behind changes on the web for quite some time. For example, when video came along, there was no way to integrate it naturally into HTML, so different companies developed their own video players to work around it. These worked OK, but they were all external plugins, meaning that you had to download them, and this was, well,…

  • Would any of the G.I.P.S.I. countries improve their economic fate by leaving the Euro behind?

Exploring the Currency debate in Europe Written by Exequiel Octavio Bertaina, Vice-Managing Editor If Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain or Ireland were to abandon the Euro, their structural problems would not disappear overnight; they could actually become worse. For simplicity’s sake, Greece will be used as an example. If Greece were to leave the Euro behind, we would initially expect the new Drachma currency to devalue such as was the case in Argentina in 2001. For investors outside of Greece paying in euros or other currencies, suddenly Greek assets would look relatively inexpensive…

  • Why Facebook should be scared with its Revenue Strategy

    Steve @ Canadian Personal Finance
    16 May 2012 | 12:18 pm
We all know the Facebook IPO is happening soon but some big news happened yesterday that, GM (the third largest advertiser in the US) pulled a $10 million dollar order because they figured out that Facebook ads don’t work. Companies need to realize that when you offer a free marketing tool like their Facebook pages that you do not need to advertise much to attract an audience. You can gain fans simply by offering great content or a nice promotion or coupon. GM has confirmed a report by the Wall Street Journal, claiming that the auto maker’s executives determined paid ads on…

I am a huge sports fan. I follow but not watch NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL. I used to attend many games (I even spent $160 once for a ticket for a regular season game between Dallas and Phoenix – amazing game and it was worth it being live). One of the things I hate about professional sports is the incredible money that these athletes make. Some teams spend money because they have lots of money to spend and can afford a few losses. I look at my investing portfolio like a cheap team like the Oakland A’s in baseball (Moneyball reference). I try to buy good affordable value stocks that…
  • How much would you pay for unlimited first-class travel in Canada?

    Steve @ Canadian Personal Finance
    11 May 2012 | 1:10 pm
I read the most interesting story today on LA Times. It is about frequent-flyers that purchased unlimited first-class travel tickets from profitable American Airlines in the 80s and 90s. They even had a perk to take a companion for a low cost as well. They basically purchased their tickets for what the company thought was a lot of money back then but the buyers have travelled so much that the company is losing too much money. Each holder was costing costing American more than $1 million a year. If Air Canada or Westjet had this I would purchase it (if it was a reasonable price) – it…
