As for the rest of the country, I had been to Vancouver a few times to visit my sister and my Mother, who had moved there a few years earlier. I had been to Niagara Falls as a tourists many years before, but other than that, I hadn't seen much of my new country.-I arrived with dreams…

Canada has been hit particularly hard, and if weren't for the domestic traveller, the industry would be in much worse shape. Mark Ellis
    25 Oct 2009 | 9:24 pm
Senator Charles Schumer stated today that he believes that federal credit card legislation set to become law in 2010 should be enacted earlier in order to prevent credit card companies from raising their rates in the present. The senator cited a Pew Charitable Trusts study that found that credit cards companies raised their rates by 20 percent in the first half of 2009 while federal interest rates dropped. Schumer has accused credit card companies of using the period of time before the new laws are enacted to gouge consumers with the same practices that will be banned in 2010 when the…

A bitter battle between Disney and the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood has finally ended, with victory seemingly going to the CCFC for finally achieving their goal of getting Baby Einstein products off the market. Anyone who bought a Baby Einstein product between June 5, 2004 and September 4, 2009 will be able to get their money back, while consumers can also trade in their DVDs for other products or for future discounts. The CCFC, which is a group that has dedicated itself to fighting to “reclaim childhood for corporate marketers,” has been trying to get Baby Einstein…

I would like to know which automatic commercials remover you recommend using with Media Center 7. With Vista I was using Lifextender mainly because i like the definition of the name: Quote: Because your 30-minute TV shows will now be around 22 minutes long, saving you around 15 minutes for every hour you watch TV, you'll notice that you have a lot more free time. This gives the illusion that your life is being extended... kidding. but there is no update for WMC7... Thanks

    6 Nov 2009 | 9:39 pm
I just have installed new Carrier Infinity 96 Hi-eff Gas Funace . I have set up 70F most of the time of the day. I notice my furnace runs mostly on low speed for few minutes (not sure how many) and stops for a while and runs again. However I feel comfort all the time. Only concern is running furnace on and off often would make it fail in longer term? So far temps are not too low in Scarborough so I am not sure if this is how hi-eff furnace work? Any thoughts HAVC guys?

  • The danger of letting your enemy define you

    markdykeman
    5 Nov 2009 | 6:02 pm
There’s a powerful, useful way to draw attention to your words.  Just define who your arch-enemy is and then start unloading with both barrels.  Continue the relentless assault.  If you’re lucky, your arch-enemy is one of the undead and just keeps getting back up.  Then you knock him (or her) down again, inflicting mortal damage.  And then they get back up again and…  you both win, because everyone loves a good fight. I may be unobservant or naive, but I can’t really say that I have an arch-enemy, not a person anyway, especially since the little red headed guy…

  • Why Canadians Don’t Redeem Coupons

    Guest Blogger
    5 Nov 2009 | 2:30 am
According to the Coupon Industry Association of Canada*, in 2006, Canadians redeemed 100 million of 3.6 billion coupons available. Canadian consumers that did redeem coupons saved over $134 million dollars. This sounds like a lot of coupons redeemed, but when you calculate the amount of unredeemed coupons it is astounding. With an average face value of $2.02, the amount of unredeemed coupons is approximately $7 billion dollars. Some reasons why Canadians do not redeem coupons? Coupons are not for all consumers. There are several reasons why consumers do not use them. Cutting them from…
  • Funding Your Childs Post Secondary Education

    4 Nov 2009 | 2:30 am
A recent article by the Globe and Mail regarding the increasing cost of Post Secondary tuition hit close to home.  In the article, it is projected that a child born today going to University 18 years from now would face a cost of over $100,000 for a typical 4 year program.  To add salt to the wound, the $100,000 is for a child who lives at home – it could cost over $130,000 for the students who move away. As Baby FT was born in 2008, I assume the projections for the cost of University will be fairly close to what the article states.  As we started an RESP in 2008, will it be enough…

When my son was a year and a half, we did a 3 month work term in the Philippines. We were working on a community development project on one of the remote islands for one week of our time there. It was an 18 hour ferry ride from the nearest port. While we were there my son got very sick. We took him to the local clinic where they admitted him and tried for hours to insert an IV into his veins without success. It was one of the most difficult things I’ve had to watch. How could I put my son through this? What kind of parent was I to put my child’s life at risk because of my work? He…

As the installment portion of my mortgage is soon coming to an end, lately I’ve been thinking about my leveraged portfolio and how I’m going to utilize it going forward.  I’ve written about the various options available to leveraged investors once their mortgage is paid off, but I didn’t get into the investment plan going forward. For me,  I will most likely keep the existing HELOC balance (and portfolio) but use the freed up cash flow to invest with instead of increasing the investment loan.  Perhaps it’s my conservative side coming out, but why leverage…

5DMKII + 85mm f/1.8 I feel like my creativity died with the summer sun. Dull days, rain & all that other work I do to make money have kept me from shooting. I’m mad at myself for letting my photography slowly slip away in the last while. Other than having to pay the rent and buy food, the main reason that I haven’t been taking photos is that I feel such a pressure to produce “perfect” images. I’ve set a high bar for myself and when I don’t reach it technically or emotionally, I feel let down and oddly self-conscious about my work. This photo, for…

I have always been a voracious reader.  Most of the summers of my youth I participated in our local library's reading challenge.  You know the one - it usually had some kind of cheesy theme like "Discovered Hidden Treasure through Books" to try to encourage kids to read.  A number of books that I discovered in these tender years set my character and my expectations.  I took these books as realistic depictions of what I could accomplish as a young woman if I only had the right drive and curiosity.  And as both a guilty pleasure and the literary…

Do you think that this is a Blog about technology? Others have said it's about New Media. Some have even suggested that it's about what's happening right now in the world of Social Media. The truth is that this Blog is about marketing. It's about how your business connects in a world where everybody is connected. It's also about how your messages are created and spread. We no longer have the luxury of communicating to consumers as we see fit (mostly through the muscle of mass media), because now there are many online channels where thousands (actually millions... actually billions) of people…

I was stuck, and it was my own fault. After a long flight delay, I found myself in New York City, walking toward one of the most challenging places in which to find a healthy meal: Times Square. Beyond pizza, hot cashew nuts and a pastrami sandwich bigger than my head, I had no idea where to turn. So I turned to Twitter and sent out a request to my online community for a healthy, fast and fairly priced meal. I wasn't expecting much. Maybe "What? Are you saying that the Carnegie Deli is not fat-free?" But within a few minutes, I had the information I needed and, based on multiple…

Part of the problem Pollan speaks about with our Western diet, amongst others, is that the food we eat is no longer grown anywhere close to where we live. The study also showed that positive moods seem to promote more creativity and coperation while negative moods tend to promote attentiveness and awareness of the surroundings. This seems crazy to me becuase I always feel like when I am in a bad mood I couldnt care less about…

One that stuck out (hat tips to Patty Gibson) was a feature about dogs and their owners. With Vancouver being such a dog-friendly city, complete with doggy day spas, dog bakeries, with a selection of off-leash parks and beaches, I thought it would be a great fit. Visit the original article at http://www.miss604.com/2009/11/goodbye-talk1410.html.There have been many changes in the Vancouver radio landscape over the last year or so and while some have been great (such as the addition of The Peak 100.5 and Shore 104.1), the mics of many beloved personalities have been turned off. This morning I hopped into a Zipcar and while the tuner said “1410″ I heard the call sign “Team 1410″. I thought this must instantly be a mistake since Chum Radio Vancouver hosts both stations. It was at this time Movember was created (Mo being local slang for a mustache) and they really had no idea how their silly idea would soon lead to a global movement. Lately I’ve been listening to the original version of Cream’s “Crossroads” a lot. I first heard that song in 1988 or so, as it was on one of the first CDs my family ever bought. It was on an Eric Clapton four CD box set by the same name. As you might imagine, I listened to those CDs a ton in my teenage years. As an aside: the version of “Crossroads” I’m talking about is a live recording. As the band finishes, you hear applause and then somebody says “Eric Clapton [something] on vocals”. I’ve always wondered who says that? Bassist…

Yesterday on Springwise I read about The Living Christmas Company, which delivers living, potted Christmas trees to your home in southern California. They pick them up after the holidays, and replant them. In fact, a family can get the same tree year after year. I tweeted about this clever idea, and the Twitter account Climate Smart pointed me to Carbonsync (yes, I am troubled by the inconsistent capitalization of their name on their site–let’s move on). They’re offering a similar delivery and pickup service to your home in and around Vancouver. The Living Christmas Company…

Over the summer, I read a great article in The New Yorker about TicketMaster, Live Nation and the history of rock concert promotions. It was unavailable online until somebody kindly added it to this Reddit discussion thread in which I was involved. You can view a PDF of the article here, or I’ve also uploaded it here. It’s a pretty fascinating article, and reveals some surprising (to me, at least) facts about the concert business. One is that TicketMaster and Live Nation have struggled, financially, and lose huge chunks of revenue due to scalping. Another is that, of course, many…

I recently got a MacBook Air. Julie has one too, so we’re constantly mistaking hers for mine and vice versa. This seemed like a natural opportunity to stick a decal or ’skin’ on our laptops to tell them apart. I’ve never really been a guy who puts stickers on, well, anything. I’ve never had them on my car or binders in high school and never on a laptop, either. There’s nothing wrong with them–I’ve just never had the impulse. I wanted to make a custom skin from a photo I’d taken. So I spent a while trolling through my Flickr account and…

    6 Nov 2009 | 6:08 am
Yesterday's "Drop Fees" rally saw hundreds of university students join their peers in separate feeder marches in front of University of Toronto's Convocation Hall. The group of about a thousand then made its way to Queen's Park in order to protest on its front lawn. Organized by the Canadian Federation of Students Ontario, this year's iteration of the province-wide campaign stressed the need for the government to lower tuition fees and provide affordable education on account of the fact that high tuition fees contribute to poverty in Ontario. The jury's still out, however, on whether this was…

For once, short is good. Keep it short. That’s the motto of the first annual Vancouver Short Film Festival happening this October 23-24. With all the film festivals happening this month, you may have a hard time keeping track. The Vancouver Short Film Festival’s obvious difference is that it showcases short films under 15 minutes that are easy to watch in length, but make no mistake – they don’t compromise quality and story. Formerly known as the Vancouver Student Film Festival, the festival is now expanding to include a category for professional filmmakers to showcase their work.

Yesterday was the 80th anniversary of women in Canada being recognized as persons under the law (the law at that time being dictated by the British North America Act). This was as the result of a real struggle on the part of the group of women now known as the Famous Five. The state did not simply hand over this victory to women; it had to be fought for by a ballsy bunch of old broads. It’s an important history lesson for all Canadians, especially Canadian women, to know about. But it does also need to be studied in conjunction with the darker side of Canadian women’s history,…

According to the class’s teacher, the complaint brought forward by these children is the result of more than 2 years’ work on gender roles. This story makes me want to jump for joy.
